Default 2.5 N/A valve cover gaskets...

I am having trouble finding the correct valve cover gaskets for my car. I just recently bought a 99 legacy outback 2.5 DOHC BUT am told that the engine was changed out about 50,000 miles ago. It seems that this engine did not come out of a 99 legacy because the valve cover gaskets i am receiving based on the VIN do not work I need someone to identify hopefully what these look like (maybe from an impreza, maybe a forester?) the dealer checked legacy and impreza from 96 to 99 and they all super cede to these oval gaskets which can't possibly seal correctly. I have posted two pictures, the square gaskets with the circle and pigtails are what i am looking for, the oval-type ones are what i keep getting handed. the second picture is a picture of the valve cover gasket itself with the old matching (leaking) gasket. I only posted here because i was already a member (still have my 96 impreza outback 230,000 miles and runs like a champ!) and this motor may be an impreza motor. any help is appreciated.I have not checked into this yet but if it helps any, there is a hard (static) electrical fault for knock sensor 1. possibly the 99 legacy had 2 knock sensors and the engine came from a donor car with only 1 knock sensor? this is just a wild stab in the dark and may be completely unrelated but the engine runs fabulous its just this fault won't clear. i was planning on getting into that next but i am hung up on these valve cover gaskets right now...

I've never seen gaskets like that on a Subaru. I'll be interested to see what the answer is.

I recently bought a used motor from a local company, and I have the same gaskets. Try checking older models for the gaskets you need. Maybe '97, '96, etc.

I think the '96 Legacy 2.5GT has that style of gaskets around the spark plug holes. Do the valve covers have "DOHC" or something like cast into the outside of them in big letters? As I recall, the ebay engine I had at one point had that style of gaskets, and the valve covers said DOHC on them.

The replacement engine is probably one of the "JDM" engines that you see on ebay all the time. They could be the HLA (hydraulic lash adjuster) heads rather than the later shimmed bucket style.

^Mine did. Sounds like '96 2.5GT may be a good place to start looking.
