Question My 2011 WRX violently vibrates on the highway... Wanna go for a ride?

So today I took a drive towards ER and after I got to 60mph my car started vibrating kinda hard. I continued speeding up to about 70 and my car was vibrating violently: the seats are especially noticeable. You can feel the chassis just shake like crazy! I took the Arctic Valley exit and pulled over to see if I could spot anything unusual (bent rims, hood not closed all the way, low tires), but everything looks fine.

This has all happened on the Glenn, so I'm gonna test it out on the Seward. I was just driving around a few days ago on the highways and the car was fine. My niece said she felt it last night when she was on the Glenn, but assumed it was normal since she's not used to turbocharged sedans.

Does anyone want me to pick them up and ride with me to maybe offer some input before I schedule with Conti tomorrow? If you haven't checked out a 2011 WRX then now is your chance! Mavrik, you know you wanna! PM or text me. It's 3:42. I'll chill at my mom's for about another 30 minutes and then take off (currently on the east side of Anchorage, Debarr and Turpin).

Only a truck, for now. ;)

Default

1. Snow in the rims making it unbalanced.
2. Axle in a bad state.

Of course, the car is under warranty, so I would just take it to the dealership if the rims are cleaned off and it is still happening.

I've had the same thing happen before. It was from me spinning around in a parking lot and snow getting packed in the rims. Try letting it melt down in a garage if you can.

I checked for packed snow, too. Nothing there.

I've purposely messed around in the snow before in my Forester and STI and NEVER had this happen. Just one of those things, I guess.

I'll see if I can get it in a garage just in case, though. Thanks.

well here's another thought....you threw a wheel weight somehow and your rims are in fact out of balance.

Hahaha Yeah, I thought about that. She's 23 and drives stick better than me (smoothly, anyways) and she doesn't get into fights with snowbanks. haha

I scraped off a bunch of ice that was collecting in the rear wheels. The fronts were cleeeaaaan.

All the lugs are tight, too.

Hmmmm... dag nabbit. Wheel weights? Are those applied to stock rims on appropriate-sized winter tires?

you have to balance a rim and tire every time you take them apart

I might swing by. Since I'll be taking the highway that direction anyways I'll see if maybe it was just the rear wheels throwing it off. Thank you, sir.

I would try melting down the car anyways. I had the exact same thing happen, and I couldn't see any snow in the wheels.

Things that can cause this would be a missing wheel weight, snow, mud or ice packed into the inside of the wheel, a bad CV Joint or U-Joint in the axles or drive shaft, a loose wheel or a wheel that is installed cocked or crooked, an unevenly worn or damaged tire or an uneven or damaged road surface. There may be a couple of other things but I can't think of anything. Can you identify an area of the car that the vibration seems to originate from?

No, I can't identify the origin. Our highways are notorious for having deeps ruts, but I switched lanes and drove off them to make sure it wasn't the road. I searched for an origin both by sight and sound. The most obvious affect is the violent vibration of the front seats and the steering wheel in my hand. The dash looked like it was shaking, but I figured that was more of me sitting in my vibrating chair than anything.

I'm about to go for a drive, but I'll definitely be letting Conti check it out.

I had the same issue awhile back and it drove me insane trying to figure out what it was. Turned out I had an air leak in one of my tires and even though it was keeping pressure for the most part, it was causing terrible handling with the car. Wheel weights, tire pressure naturally are becoming the first things I check.

One of the tires could have grown a bulge in the tread, as well. I had one tire do that, and it plopped down the road. It is terrible when that happens, as SOA generally won't cover that, as it is a wear item.

Maybe no snow pack in there but what about ice? There could have been snow and it melted down when the tires and wheels were warmed up from driving and left water to form ice at the low spot of the wheels after it was parked. Hmm...it's worth a check. If you see anything, take the car to a do-it-yourself carwash with a spray wand and blast the wheels really good.
