So tonight i was a little bored, and seeing as I'm getting my hood painted soon anyway i had my scoop off the car and in my basement. So i decided I'd make a grill for it. Here a guide to tell you how easy it really is to keep crap from flying into your engine bay.
First you have to find yourself some sort of mesh to fashion the grill out of. I went to Canadian tire and found some metal gutter guard. perfect material, but it was bent. so that took a grand total of 30 seconds to fix. ![]() ![]() Next i traced the back of my scoop to make a rough estimate of a cardboard template so i could transfer it to the mesh ![]() Then i took hold of a pair of snips and went to town on the trimming. I left about a half inch of clearance all the way around so i would have lots of room to work with. and i ended up with this. ![]() ![]() Now for a test fit before i paint and silicone it in place and ta da ![]() All in all this took me about 45 minutes. But i was messing around and not prepared with tools at all. so id say 20 minutes of real honest work if you have everything at arms length. The gutter guard mesh was realy easy to work with. the snips cut absolutely no problem and i was able to bend the edges at 90 degrees with just my fingers. if i had more scoops, id do it again. because the gutter guard came in a pack of 5, so now i have 4 spare pieces i don't know what to do with. Gutter guard: $20 for 5 45 minutes of my time: jack squat I do intend to paint the mesh black, but i didn't have any paint at the time so its staying silver until i get some in the next day or two.

Looks... over performance again... Unless you have a FMIC you shouldn't be doing this mod, as it lowers the efficiency of the TMIC noticeably...
Sorry but that's how it is... |

Fair enough, ill agree with that. Makes perfect sense that the laminar flow would be interrupted a bit by the addition of a protective grill.
But ill counter you with the argument that birds, rocks, leaves, ice chunks, snow, road garbage or anything some random jack off might want to shove in there might also have a detrimental effect on the efficiency of the IC. |

I tested a set up like yours on my car and it doubled the time it took to cool the IC down to as low as it was going to get as compared to without a screen and the IC temps were about 6 *F to 8*F warmer than without the screen... I know that doesn't sound like much, but that's going backwards instead of forwards ... I would put a water sprayer on and it could increase the TMIC efficiency by about 12% instead of lowering it... ![]() |

So the grill is all done.
Looks the same, only a little more subtle with the black. I wont feel like as much of a douche driving around with that extra flash, but i will feel a bit safer knowing I'm protected from whatever life literally throws at me. ![]() ![]() Now the Seibon scoop has metal tabs that go all around the edges. not sure exactly why they are there, but they worked absolutely perfectly for just hooking around the mesh. so i did not require glue. if you don't have these metal clips. i recommend getting some thin metal and gluing that on and making your own clip. Very simple and its going to hold for as long as i care to have this on the car. just don't bend it too much or they will snap off. as a few of mine were as the scoop was used. ![]() BTW, for everyone who wants to flame me for putting a grill on my scoop because of reduced efficiency. You can not flame. Because i do not have a TMIC. However i also do not have a FMIC, because my car is a 2.5i. Now that, i know a lot of you will not like. But hey, i wanted a hood to break up the bland look so i got one. and i like it. |

no epic fail, the dude is making his car look good, it isn't like he's going to roll up next to you and cause a drop in performance of your car.

The most i intend to do my car is get the "body kit" from the 2.5i premium/touring, only i intend to stay wingless. and eventually id like to get away from the newport blue and go WRB, white, or black. but that wont be for many years to come, as i cannot justify all that money just so i can change the colour. I'll wait until its at least slightly faded or chipped or something. |

Good one but there is a difference between "posing" to blend in,and trying to save some else's self esteem ![]() |

Good write up, I don't mind if your car is a 2.5i, and I won't hate on it.
