Default '99 legacy outback limited engine swap?

My friend blew is engine on his '99 legacy outback limited and is searching to do an engine swap. I have a few questions. His father is a mechanic and he has his own auto shop so they can help definitely with the swap. I also have a wrx that I've worked on and done my own clutch jobs and such so I have a lil background with car work as well. What I want to know is which engines are compatible for his car? We are thinking of mine as well going for a turbocharged engine. Single turbo to keep it simple? Is there an engine where we can just drop in, swap the ecu and use the stock wiring to make it work? Or will any engine require a new wire replacement for the new engine/ecu?

Can someone direct me to where I can read up on doing a wiring swap? Thanks a lot for the help guys!

His stock engine was a 2.5L ej25D motor

Basically any EJ series Subaru engine will work. Unless he sticks with another EJ25D, a new ECU and wiring harness merge will be required.

There are a number of folks who have done WRX or STI swaps into Legacys, but it's basically no different than doing a swap into an Impreza, so all the information can be found here in the Subaru Conversions forum.

Edit: As a couple of examples, search for threads by morocco88 and Soarer, both of whom have done turbo swaps in late 90s Legacys.
