Unhappy Uh oh, 3200rpm buzz...

Got my car back from the shop after running over that fat rock ($4000 in repairs) and now I have that 3200rpm whine

Is it the heatshields? I forget... But its only at like 3200rpms and goes away if im above or below it, and it sounds like a metal pail shaking up against the car at a fast rate (its definatly coming from the front of the car somewhere)

woahh i have the same prob at 3500 rpm, i got that after bringing it to the dealer and them replacing my cats.
and i was thinking, if it was the heat shields, then why only at a certain rpm range?

Probably the heat shields. The vibrations from the engine at specific RPM,s cause them the resonate (viprate harmonically really fast), hence why you only hear it at a certain RPM. Hop this helps.

I had many tiny pebbles stuck in my heat sheilds, after many off road excursions.

rattle like a biotch, till I cleaned them out, utnill I saw it, it thought it was a loose sheild, but got all the rocks out and now its ok

I had the same thing happen with me. All I did was go under and tap the different heat shields till I found the one making noise. I couldn't get the bolts off due to excessive rust so I simply used pliers to bend the section around the bolts up and down till they snapped and removed heat shield...that's what my mechanic said he does. All heat shields eventually start rattling. *shrug*

Ok cool, I was planning on putting the car up on ramps when I get up and toodle around down there and see what I can see... I noticed I have some dirt around the cats, so maybe the accident knocked them loose or something.

Ill post if it works

OK, I unbolted and took off the heatshield around the first cat and by the point where the two exhaust ports connect, cleaned them out, found a pinky sized rock in one of them, and now the sound its gone

Heres what it looked like down there btw:
