Default Any AT&T employees or iPhone gurus on here?

hey for the summer a necessary app for my work has been designed and they only bothered to make it for the iphone, i am in contract with sprint, so i'm not switching to at&t or verizon.

is there any way to by a used iphone and use it for 4-5 months on 3g (not just wifi) without a contract? i know apple is starting to sell no contract iphone 4's but that's a little steep and i would just get an ipad at that cost and deal with the bulky inconvenience.

feel free to pm me if you don't want to post in the public forum.

They will all be expensive. Even a 3g is like 150 or so on ksl I think.

You don't have to have a contract to buy used, but I don't think you can pay full price for a new one and have no contract. Have fun selling alarms this summer!

The problem is AT&T iPhones are GSM and Sprint runs a CDMA network. I haven't looked into whether or not a carrier unlock is available for the Verizon iPhone to let it work on Sprint, but even if so you'll have a hard time finding one of the brand new Verizon iPhone 4s at a discounted used price.

well unless you value the hardware as well as the function.

uh, app is a private one designed by the company and only available to operations managers so no way i can give it to you to try and port it, though that would be an awesome alternative.

i toyed with the idea of the verizon iphone hacked but still that's 5-600$ and to be honest i don't have or intend to keep a data plan past the summer (can't justify the costs yet)

and haha, hell no i'm not selling alarms. i am a head tech for the guys that install the alarms the summer guys are selling. main difference is we have souls, and actually do manual labor, and are generally much more intelligent and can change our own oil lol.

the app is how we track current installs and schedule new ones so i have to have it, last year i used a 3g ipad but that was a pain in the but, i would pay 150 for a 3g iphone and run it no contract for 4 months then use it as an ipod or sell it. if i could run it no contract (or possible free bootleged onto the carrier, but we don't speak of such things here on nasioc right? )

thing that pisses me off the most is the company had a basic version of the app working on android and then scrapped it. shouldn't been android from the start

If it's a work-necessary app and they want you to use it, the company should provide the hardware and plan.

These cases really deserve a platform-agnostic solution. Fanboyism is fun and all when it comes to games and other apps, but for mission-critical stuff no IT department should be placing its eggs in one basket.

No effing way I'd let my work make me pay for a phone for something they want to do. Either they pay for it or eff off.

yah, that's also how i feel, but that doesn't change how it is. i can see the decision being that way as most of the alarm fanboys already use iphone 4's and have the newest air-jordans and their bowel movements smell like high end cologne in their minds, but i digress... looks like i might be stuck with the glorified itouch called the ipad again this summer, keep me posted any of you guys that know ways of getting data to work on an iphone with no contract.

i've also considered just using a mobile hotspot in the car + itouch but those are kinda pricy too.

Your options are currently, a GSM iphone on either ATT or T-Mobile if you get an unlocked or unlockable one (all 3g / 3gs's are unlockable).

Or you can see if there is an unlock to run a verizon i4 on sprint however if money is an issue I would look for a GSM phone and go month to month with tmobile.

Or you if you can tether your sprint phone, and want to have a couple devises you could get a ipod touch.

hey godfather, sprints never dropped a call on me, though i can't vouch for their data though as i don't use it. their phones do tend to have a keyboard too, which is nice.
