Question How to remove old grill??? 2008 WRX

So, I bought a black painted insert for the impreza grille. As my post title suggests I can't get the stock grill off to put the insert in. Anyone know how to get it off? I already poped out the 8 plastic pins from the top... But can't get the bottom to disconnect from the bumper

Edit: pic of the top retainer clips removed.. what next?

The grill piece

Found this thread but not sure if it helps...

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1422338

I am gonna do grille swap soon too. And I am wondering if I need to take off the whole front bumper as some owners in Japan have suggested.

If you figure out a way to do it please post some pics, thanks!

Here's a pic of the stock grille assembly I found. Might not be useful but I'll leave it here for reference.

If you do figure out how to get it off, paint all of it black. No pt cruiser chrome FTW.
Does the dealership have the shop manual availible for the public yet?

shop manual: http://techinfo.subaru.com

looking at the parts diagram

appears there are 4 tapping screws on the backside of the grill that may be holding it in place as well

try removing those ....

Just got the instruction sheet today with my grille.

I guess you have to remove the front bumper...

It's too cold to work in the garage here these days. Let me know how easy it is to take off the bumper after you did it, thanks.

You don't have to remove the front bumper to do it. I didn't. You just have to squeeze you hand inbetween the grill and the radiator to get those 4 screws out. After the screws are removed there are 4 (maybe it's 2) clips you have to push up to remove the grill from the bumper.

Where did you squeeze your hand in from?

i know you mentioned that it's a WRX, not an STi, but just for reference - on STi's, you can reach those screws by reaching up through the lower opening in the bumper. on WRX's, that opening is too thin, so i guess you're best bet would be either going in from the top, like dees421 suggests (it might be possible once you remove the 8 clips in the picture, and pushing the grille out slightly), or maybe by removing the front plastic undertray, and reaching up from under there. i haven't tried it on a WRX, so i can't say for sure.

Yep that's where I went through. "Biggie squeeze it to make sh%^ fit". I guess I just must have small hand. But the Picture on the top looks just like my bay, and my hand fit. Sorry your's won't. I guess you will have to take the bumper off.

So I ended up taking off the whole bumper. It was a lot easier than I expected to follow the diagram.

The only tricky part was step 3 where you need to detach the bumper from the body. There's a series of clippings along the line where it joins the fender. It was very tight on my car. I was told that by pushing against the bumper (from certain angle, you just have to experiment) it makes it a little easier to pull the bumper off from the fender, and that worked.

Nothing was broken. But I would suggest putting masking tape around the fender and headlight to prevent scratch when you put the bumper back on.

Here's some after pics.

+1 for not taking the bumper off. It's a tight squeeze but possible.

It's the "unknow" factor of doing it for the first time that made it seem difficult. After doing it I felt was actually really easy. I wouldn't mind doing it again and I am sure I would only need 1/4 of the time I spent.

LOL I just couldn't wait till it gets warm, and my car is full of road salt and mud and my garage wasn't heated either. Just do it!

I just pulled the bumper backing away from the radiator support on the top and took off the 4 philips screw with a small stubby screwdriver. If you pull enough, the whole grille support will pull away and you can reach in from all sides.
