Default Former MADD Leader Arrested For Drunk Driving

Quote:
f something hilarious yet tragically ironic is going to happen, chances are it will happen in Florida, men urinating on chicken at the grocery store notwithstanding. The latest of Florida's wacky produce: former Gainesville Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter president Debra Oberlin was arrested for, you guessed it, drunk driving in Gainesville.

Pulled over for veering across lanes of traffic at about 1:10 a.m., Oberlin had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to the incident reports. Oberlin failed a field sobriety test.

Oberlin's blood alcohol level was then found to be between .234 and .239 according to two Breathalyzer tests, though she says she only drank four beers before hopping--or more likely, stumbling--into her car.

Thank you, Florida, for your fantastic fruits. MADD you got some 'splaining to do.

Although MADD does approach hysteria in their zeal for equating drunk drivers with Nazis, I don't see how a FORMER chapter leader's behavior would reflect poorly upon the organization.

I do. Even if she was a former leader she must of had alot of time and contribution spent to get that position. Then she goes and gets busted for DWI. I find it hysterical .

Pathetic.

It is groups like MADD that have led to overcriminalization--like getting a DUI for just BEING in you car, legally drunk, sleeping it off, but you COULD have driven.

This is right up there with Boy Scout leaders getting locked up for touching little boys in the naughty spot. Priceless.

I got pissed at MADD because they kept on pestering me for money year round even though I had already made my contributions for that year. Always bugging someone for money is the quickest way to get no money at all IMHO.

I have to agree. While there is some obvious irony involved in the incident it's also a bit ludicrous to blame MADD for this woman's poor decision making. Does anyone know why this woman is no longer working for MADD? Perhaps she was fired (I'm speculating here) a chemical addiction problem that began impacting her ability to do her job.

As long as employers are still recruiting from the human race then the potential for fallibility, error and bad decisions will always be a risk.

No one is blaming MADD for what this woman did. Only pointing out the irony and hopefully she gets what's coming to her. The phrase you reap for you sow comes to mind Apparently her chapter was closed due to lack of funding.

To quote the Beastie Boys, that hypocrite smokes ten packs a day.

The founder of MADD left the group when she felt that it went beyond drunk driving and onto neoprohibition.

Just another reason why we shouldn't let these hypocrites curtail our freedoms and let their junk science (kid's brains magically stop developing at 21, so we shouldn't let kids drink with their parents before then?) trample our freedoms.

how much of society's resources have been spent busting 18 year olds for drinking in a safe, controlled environment?

If your organization has 'Mothers' in the name, I'm out (unless it ends in ILF).

I guess it depends on where you live. But if that place is California then your answer is 'none' because it's not illegal for an 18 year old to consume alcohol. It's also legal for those under 18 to consume alcohol as long as they are in the presence of their parent/guardian and in a private place (defined as not open to the public). The reason most people think it's illegal is because the above drinking situation is not the norm for under 21s...and the police only get called when someone takes it too far (drunk party goer wants to dive into your neighbors pool at 2AM by using the top of your fence as a diving platform... Don't pretend you haven't seen/done it!) 8)

I'm not sure if you guys are aware, but MADD has the interesting distinction of being the only lobbying group that receives federal funding.

That's right, folks... MADD gets a fat check from the government every year to assist them in their efforts to... lobby the government to further their agenda. Your tax dollars at work.

??? I'm not sure if you've heard of groups like blackwater, enron, exxon-mobil, planned parenthood, pg&e etc etc etc. All these companies have a lobbying arm whose sole responsibility it is to lobby on behalf of their parent company.

If you think that all MADD does is lobby, then you obviously aren't familiar with the entirety of their program. They also fund DUI checkpoints, take part in organizing and funding high school alcohol awareness programs (programs like 'every 15 minutes') and organize/fund driving alternative programs on college campuses ('safe rides') to give college students free rides home if they have drank too much.

I'm not sure if you were aware.

You apparently missed the point of my post. They receive FEDERAL FUNDING directly. Not profit from a Federal contract for services rendered, but direct funding.

Let's be clear. The mission of MADD is no longer specifically about reducing drunk driving, it's about eliminating the consumption of alcohol in general. They are neo-prohibitionists with an ax to grind. The alcohol-focused equivalent of the Brady campaign.

But notice... the Brady campaign isn't federally funded. Neither is Blackwater, or Planned Parenthood, or any of the other unrelated organizations that you strung together. Only MADD receives direct federal funding to further their agenda.
