Default 1st Gen. Legacy Headers=UEL?

So I have come across a couple people online putting UEL factory Legacy headers on their GC's and GF's. Does anybody have info on this? I would assume that it has to be the 1st generation Legacies, so about 1990-1994? Anybody have info as to whether these headers are in fact UEL? I want to get some UEL action on my Impreza, because it doesn't sound boxer enough right now. Thanks!

yes, legacy headers from first gen are compatible with 2.5 RS. As long as it comes off of a 2.5 and not a 2.2. The 2.2 are single port, 2.5 are dual port. They wont fit 06+, though, because that is the year they came out with EL headers and they don't connect from the driver's side anymore. They are UEL. Not sure why you would swap, though, because it is the exact same part IIRC. I would buy a used borla or borla replica if you want more flow. axle-back exhaust will bring out the rumble more than switching headers.

1st gen 2.2 legacy headers are in fact dual port.

No first gen was offered with a 2.5, only 2.2.

Picture of my 1993 without engine, exposed factory headers. Dual port indeed.

And yes, they are UEL.

ahhh. Thanks for clarifying Jesse.

I still don't think it would be worth him swapping, right?

If he wants the sound then it's up to him. He can probably get some junkyard headers for cheap as opposed to borla replicas which are known for cracking.

I personally think that the 1st gen headers sound better than the UEL turbo headers. But I'm a first gen fan boy, that's just my opinion.

I was under the impression that the 1st gen legacy header has a smaller ID than a stock WRX. I guess I'm not sure if this would be going on his wrx or a different car...

BC legacies have a more UEL stock manifold than the BD BE BL (2005 only) came with, which is why all BC's sound so sweet when they spring a exhaust leak As far as swapping you don't want to swap with a BC legacy (stock to stock) you would want to simply get you Borla Replica's, Borla's or try one of the other methods for fitting UEL to your ride. I and a few other modified stock WRX/LGT manifolds while other used a after makret while others fabbed up a set from scratch.

Cool, thanks guys! That's exactly what I wanted to know. All I want is the boxer sound on my Impreza. This is my 1.8 liter daily, so I am not really going for full on performance, haha. Thanks!

I know joejoe ran 1st gen legacy headers on his 1.8 before he went to forced induction and here was the result:

You are going to want at least one resonator in there because the legacy headers tend to give off a raspy sound upon deceleration. Unless you want the raspiness, its up to you.

Haha! That is actually one of the places I heard of someone doing this. There is also one video of a guy on RS25 that did the same thing, I just wasn't sure what they were talking about.

Thanks for the advice! Now to hunt down a set of these little buggers...

I've been to two junkyards and all their legacy headers look like they are equal length... I can't visually see a difference from the ones I have now. I would imagine the UEL ones would look much different. Anybody have pictures of NA 1st gen legacy headers?

All of the junkyards in my area chop the exhaust systems out before dropping them on the lot. I am looking for a pair of these headers, so if you come across a pair while junkyarding it up, I'll gladly make it worth your while.
