Default The Mitsubishi Evo is no more

http://www.autocar.co.uk/blogs/autoc...s-no-more.aspx

Quote:
I’ve just spent an engaging half-hour in the company of Gayu Eusegi, Mitsubishi’s global product director.

Mostly we talked about the new Global Small Concept, which will be built in Thailand and sized somewhere between a Toyota Aygo and the Colt supermini. It’ll go on UK sale in 2012, effectively replacing the Colt in the line-up.

But also he told me some news, which seemed to surprise a few Mitsubishi Europe bods as much as it did me.

The Lancer Evolution X, Eusegi told me, will be the last Evo. “There is still a demand [for the car],” he said, “but we must stop.” Eyebrow up.

“Our influence now is EV technology,” Eusegi said, adding that the decision was a “policy change”.

It seems Mitsubishi, which is going to introduce eight full electric or hybrid cars by 2015, has decided its image is about lowering CO2, not making lurid replicas of rally cars that don’t go top-level rallying any more.

Eusegi said that customers would find it “easier to understand” what Mitsubishi was about if it was no longer in this motorsport-inspired market.

He seemed to put the rumoured diesel hybrid Evo replacement to bed, too. So the X will be the last Evolution model? “Yes. Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles,” said Eusegi. “Maybe then we can enter the market again.”

Until then, prepare yourselves for the end of an era.

And suddenly, Mitsubishi became the world's worst automaker.

This will be good for its reputation/legacy as it goes on. I can see a stock Evo being worth something some day, especially an Evo IX.

But it's bad for modders and enthusiasts in general. Of course, Mitsubishi has been on a downward slide for years. I just figured they would keep making the Evo until they withdrew from the American market. Leave it to Mitsubishi to stop selling the only car that anybody has wanted since the middle of the last decade.

Wow. This is really crappy news.

This, hopefully won't, but may cause Subaru to make the next WRX/STi underwhelming because there will no longer be a direct competitor. However, if that does happen, hopefully Ford or VW will capitalize on the void and make a comparable AWD competitor for stateside out of the Focus or the Golf (special edition R won't count because it will be a limited production).

This sucks, though I was never really in the market for an EVO, but I did like the car. At least it went out as decent car, unlike the horse's ass Eclipse.

And I suppose that puts to rest the rumors I heard of a hybrid EVO. (not quite sure why I kept on hearing so much about how good a hybrid EVO would be).

This is not good news for car lovers and Subaru owners. Without an Evo to kick the STIs butt every year, Subaru has less incentive to step up its game. At the rate it's going, the STI is entering BMW price territory and lacking many of the amenities of a $35,000 - $40,000 car.

I don't see where is said they would stop selling the Evo X. They just said they would not develop an EVO XI.

I would guess the current car will be available until the current mom-and-pop Lancer is replaced. With the current financials of Mitsu, that could be a while.

The STI and EVO have been diverging for a few years now. I don't think that Subaru has been trying to 'beat' the EVO since '08ish.

Mitsubishi sold 6,893 cars last month...

Clearly they need to focus on fixing their brand first before focusing on a low volume niche market vehicle.

This is truly a sad day indeed. Even if you hate the EVO to your very core, the fact that it existed gave subaru a reason to keep the WRX/STi up to par. Now with no direct competitor they can lay back and take it easy knowing they own that market segment. This is overwhelmingly bad as the new generation impreza is going to be pretty big too. Considering how soft they made GRs stock this doesn't bold well for the new up coming WRX and STi, if there's even going to be an STi anymore

Wake up, Subaru has to meet cafe standards too. The STI and possibly the WRX too will be axed in the next 3 years. Unless Subaru can pull a 40mpg car that sells like hotcakes out of their ass, I don't know how they can keep our beloved cars around much longer.

So... In the past few years both the EVO and STi have capped their horsepower at 300 (arguably they just agree'ed not to go and higher)...

Does this mean the STi might get a bump in power now that the evo is no more?

More likely it means that the STi won't be around much longer.

Wake up, you, everyone you knew and will know are going to die someday. Doesn't make it less sad knowing it's going to happen ok? I also doubt the WRX is ever going to be axed. That's like saying the Forester XT and Legacy GT are gonna get axed too cause they have turbos.
