Default Jeep Confirms Plans For MINI Rival

Quote:
The Chrysler Group’s 4x4 brand Jeep will broaden its model offering in 2013 to include a supermini-sized ‘B-segment’ SUV.

Jeep’s CEO Mike Manley told Autocar at the Geneva motor show “there’s definitely space in the market for a Jeep-brand B-segment SUV. We’re already working on a project that will meet that need, and expect to have the car on the road by 2013.”

Brit Manley suggested that Chrysler’s alliance with Fiat would be critical to providing engines and mechanicals for the rugged hatchback. Fiat’s 1.3- and 1.6-litre JDTm diesel engines, and it’s 1.4-litre MultiAir petrols, are favourite to power the car, most commonly with front-wheel drive; Fiat’s Grande Punto platform is likely to be adapted to underpin the car. However, the availability of four-wheel drive on range-topping models was described by Manley as “an absolute necessity.”

The new Jeep is likely to ape premium superminis like the Mini Cooper and Audi A1 with the length of its options list and the extent to which it can be customised to suit any taste. However, what Manley refers to as ‘the Wrangler bloodline’ will be very evident in the styling of the crossover hatchback: “imagine a slightly softer and smaller updated version of the Wrangler’s iconic grille and headlight design and you’ll have a good idea of how its front-end should look,” he said.

Jeep will hope that the new car can steal some of the success that the Nissan Juke is currently tapping into in the UK and around Europe, as well as attracting some younger clientele to the Jeep brand.

“It could be a breakthrough car in the US market as well,” said Manley. “At the moment, there’s little precedent for a subcompact SUVs selling in big numbers in North America, but we think that a car with the power of the Jeep brand behind it could be really popular.”

“I’ve already reviewed some designs for the car, and I’m very excited,” Manley went on. “This is going to be a very special car for us.”

We've known about the Panda-Jeep since the Chrysler-Fiat merger presentation discussing the next 5 years.

Jeep Patriot and Compass being replaced by models from Fiat... Panda, here we come!
by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Nov 4th 2009 at 3:19PM

It comes as little surprise that Jeep is looking beyond its current Patriot and Compass models, which have, to put it mildly, underperformed in the burgeoning compact CUV market. While the two concepts had lots of potential, the actual production ComPatriot twins were deemed uncompetitive with class leaders right when they were launched.

As such, the two models are both destined to meet their makers after the 2012 model, to be replaced by a single model sourced from Fiat. Can you say Panda (the image above is just a possible rendering, not a production car)? It's also worth noting that the iconic Wranger will get mild makeovers for both the 2010 and 2011 model years along with what seems likely to be a special 70th Anniversary Wranger for 2011.

Across the line, all Jeeps will reportedly come with an optional Trail Rated package, which means no more on-road only models like the Compass are likely to dilute the Jeep brand. That edict includes the new Grand Cherokee, and Jeep says the Trail Rated Grand Cherokee has already successfully tackled the legendary Rubicon Trail and Moab."

I think it would sell better as a Fiat Panda...with a diesel.

A little more rear overhang and ditching the dual color would do wonders for it.

Horrible, horrible idea...

why not just bring something that was closer to, or maybe a little smaller than the TJ, give it a good t-case and transmission, mated to a smaller engine, very little in the way of unnecessary options, and sell it cheap?

Didn't they already do this with the Compass and the Patriot? How well did those turn out?

should have made it look like a wrangler. somewhere in size between a full size wrangler and the Barbi wrangler.

from the front it doesn't look that bad, and in that one picture where it's on the side of the hill (if it isn't rolling backwards) it appears to be fairly capable!

bigger overhang on the front than I'd want in an offroad vehicle though.

The Compass and Patriot had crappy mileage for what they were, and poor off-road ability.

The Panda has great mileage, and surprisingly good off-road capability.

I fail to see the problem.

They should make something like the old Suzuki Samurais. Those were great mini Wranglers with good mpg.

and sell like 5 of them in USA just as Suzuki did??

It's a nice addition to Chrysler's lineup of cheap plasticky cars but I predict a major failure and sells well below the expectations.
Just look at it, would you buy it over a fit or Versa? If you lived on a farm, maybe, but then you would have your pickup and wouldn't be needing this.

might be good off-road but i don't see those buying this getting the tires anywhere near anything not resembling tarmac...unless they have a gravel driveway.

Let's just be clear, for all the reading-impaired people in this thread:

THOSE PICTURES ARE NOT THE CAR BEING DISCUSSED.

I'll repeat... those ARE NOT the "small Jeep" design, and they aren't even a sketch of it. They're some idiot's idea of what the specific sheetmetal of a Fiat Grande Punto with green paint and a Jeep badge would look like, which is retarded.

Two facts:

1) The Fiat Panda 4x4 is an awesome offroad vehicle, just watch the Top Gear episode where they pit it against a Land Rover.

2) Jeep is in dire need of a fuel-efficient entry-level model, and Fiat has the parts in the bin to do it, and do it very well.
