Default Need help with cooling system!!!

Ok so today when i got home after a 30min drive the car wasn't overheating but after i turned off the car. It sounded like loud exploding noises. So i opened the hood and it sounded like air is being pumped in the radiator? The upper coolant hose was all sucked in too? What's going on here??

Nah. The hose getting sucked in like that is typically a sign that the radiator cap is bad, or that the siphon line from the overflow bottle is clogged/blocked somehow. When the engine's hot, the expanding coolant pushes out into the overflow bottle. Once you shut the engine off and it starts to cool, the coolant from the overflow bottle should siphon back into the engine. If the radiator cap won't let it, or the line is blocked, the contracting coolant creates a vacuum and collapses the hose.

I would replace the hose that was collapsed, as that's not a good sign of the hose's health, and I'd replace the radiator cap. Ensure the system is properly "burped" and topped off and see if that fixes it.

Also fill in your vehicle details on your profile so people can tailor their advice to the type of car you've got.

Well i changed out the radiator cap and after driving around it's still doing the loud pounding noise. Loud sound coming from inside the radiator. Sounds like it's going to explode??

And you're positive the system is properly filled? I've never heard of a radiator making noises like that.

Yeah it's making pumping noises and i can see the upper radiator hose being sucked in and everytime it pumps i see the hose move. And smoke comes out of the overflow tank. All the coolant keeps being sucked dry from the overflow tank too. How do i properly fill the system? I need to fix this.

As I said before, you need to replace the upper radiator hose. I'm not saying that's going to fix the problem, but once the hose is soft enough to get sucked in like that, it needs to be replaced.

If it's sucking all the fluid out of the overflow bottle then the system isn't full. Either it wasn't filled properly to begin with, or it was full but you're losing large amounts of coolant somehow. In that case, maybe it is a head gasket, but I would think if you're losing that much coolant due to a bad head gasket that you would have some other indications of the problem.

Filling the system should be a rather simple matter of removing the radiator cap and filling the radiator. There might be a vent screw on the top of the radiator at the end opposite the cap - removing that screw helps air get out of the system as you fill. My radiator has the vent screw, and I've never had to do anything other than remove the screw and the cap and top off the radiator. If your radiator does not have the vent screw, then I would wait until everything is nice and cool, remove the cap, top off the system, then start the car. If/when the level drops, fill the radiator until it's topped off, reinstall the cap, fill the overflow bottle to the appropriate level, and you should be good.

If that doesn't fix the issue, then you've got another problem.
