Default Were not kidding: Mazda recalls 52,000 Mazda6 units because of spiders

Quote:
Mazda announced a very interesting recall today. The Japanese automaker is recalling 52,000 Mazda6 sedans because yellow sac spiders are building their nests in part of the fuel system.
A certain type of spider may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line and this may cause a restriction of the line, Mazda said in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Mazda said that the evaporative canister vent line runs from a charcoal-filled canister that cleans air coming out of the gas tank. Restriction of the vent line can prevent air from getting into the tank as the gasoline is used, resulting in negative air pressure inside the tank. That could result in a fire.

There have been 20 some reported cases of spider infestation in the Mazda6 and all have been with 4-cylinder models.
To fix the issue, Mazda dealers will inspect and repair the fuel system of necessary. The will also install a spring to prevent spider intrusion.

The itsy bitsy spider went up the carbon canister
Down came the petrol and washed the spider out
Out came the...oh nevermind

Seriously though, I admire Mazda for fixing this problem, despite the poor spiders just wanting to make a living

These guys are all over, I laid down one time to take a nap and felt a pinch, I sat up and saw one crawling across my bed. It got a little swollen but not much more. Its fun to pull fabric apart that they have made their nests in and see them scurry away.

This is such a dumb recall. I wonder what they do to fix it? Install a screen or something?

I think all the auto makers should inundate the stupid IIHS with every recall possible. Issue hundreds of thousands of them. Skew all the statistics to hell and back.

I can't stand spiders. Imagine you're driving down the interstate in traffic, when suddenly tiny spiders, thousands of them come out of the vents, start crawling up your sleaves and up your pant legs.

I'd rather not imagine that.

Maybe they meant they are going to replace their cars with Maserati Spyders instead?
