Default !!PICS ADDED!! Bronze w/ polished lip oem wrx wheels

I decided to post this not in an attempt to brag or try and show off, but to aid those who might be searching for the same info that I failed to find before I decided to say "screw it" and just take the chance. By no means are my wheels flawless, however it just goes to show that it can be done if you take the time to do it right and not cut corners. So that being said here it goes. Obviously At first I was hesitant about painting my oem 03 wrx wheels, as chipping & longevity were a concern. However after much deliberation I decided to take the plunge & do it! and do it to the best of my ability!

For the sake of reading I'll spare the lengthy details of how to prep, clean & paint as I would imagine anyone embarking on this mission would already have a fairly decent idea of how to go about performing the afore mentioned tasks. However, in the event anyone should have any questions I will be more than willing to share details.

First and foremost! Without question remove the tires! When deciding on colors with a test wheel I did not remove the tire and realized only after spraying a wheel without a tire on it, how much easier and more efficient the process was! One of my most feared concerns was mounting/balancing tires once painting was complete, as most tire machines ride on or right above the lip of the wheel. And I just wasnt willing to have all of my hard work go to waste, over some less than focused tire shop employee, deciding to pay as much attention to mounting my tires as he would some mini van.

My solution + a bonus in the appearance was to sand down the lip to bare metal and then tediouslly polish the metal, which just involved starting with a course sand paper and stepping up the grit count from roughly 150 fine grit all the way to an ultra fine 1000 grit and finishing it off with a metal polishing compound.

Below are some pictures about half way through the job, completed & ultimately on the car (which by the way is an 03 sonic yellow wrx). The whole process took me 2 and a half days and 2 coats of primer, 3 base coats & 3 coats of clear enamel.

Not sure how much I like the whole color combo, but that is by far the most creative thing I've seen anyone do with stock wheels, well done!
