Question Mounting a light bar!?

I've got a '90 Legacy LS Sedan and I'm getting more and more into the TSD Rally scene. The next few rallies are all to be done at night so I've looked around, asked some questions and found that going with a pair of Hella 4000's is gonna throw out some serious light.

Ok, so now that I know the lights that I want, I've started to try and figure out where/how I'm going to mount these suckers. For those of you unaware of the size of the Hella 4000's they are roughly the size of a dinner plate.

So I come to the forum to ask for advice on where/how to mount!?!? Has anyone else done something similar. I'd like it to be fairly supportive (so not just drilling into the front of the bumper) but at the same time not so complex it will take me and a professional weldsman to complete the project.

Ideally I'd like to put them just above the bumper line inbetween the headlights.

As always any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Buy a roof rack and just use the front bar. Mount them to it. You could mount four up there.

Subiegal. I'm fairly sure that she had a front-mounted light setup on her '98. I'd expect that you could do something very similar w/ your car.

Yes, it was a good setup. If I remember correctly, she just used some angle-iron mounts secured by the screws that hold the bottom edge of the grill.

it was a 99... and i sure did...

had a light bar fabricated...

i may still have some of those bars lyin about.. but they are not fun to install (top bar...)

the one on my RS.. drill in and through the bumper beam...
then lock the bolts down from the top...

the Legacy.. i had a similar set up on top...
and 2 L brackets on the bottom which mounted into the stock holes on the car... (upper underside)

just takes some creativity and patience...

were you looking to mount them up top?
or down below?

i'll help if i can.

I'd like to have them sit just above the bumper... so it still leaves a couple of options to either go from on top of the bumper and bolt something on there, or to come from underneath the bumper..

I'm open to anything that will work!!!

From the looks of things the most secure seems to be bolting onto the top of the bumper like you did in one of your pics there Subie Gal. But at the same time it seems like it would be a little easier to come from underneath the bumper... but I dont want it to be too flimsy either..

hmm.. I guess I have lots of requirements for this simple set up!

Thanks for you help!

Copy this design

edit: realize this is the real subaru rally car from 1990. Im pretty sure those "upper" lights mount under or near the hood hinge mounts with a bracket that comes out of the gap.
