Default 2012 Buick Verano to 2.0 4-cylinder turbo model to make 250-hp?

Quote:
When Buick unveiled the 2012 Buick Verano at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, it said that the model will be available with to engine choices including a 2.4L Ecotec 4-cylinder engine making 177-hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. That will be followed by a 2.0L 4-cylinder Ecotec turbo from the Regal lineup, which produces 220-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

According to a brochure for the 2012 Buick Verano, the 2.0L 4-cylinder Ecotec turbo could produce up to 250-hp. That would be an interesting match-up as long as this isnt a little typo.

When we sat down with GMs Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn at the 2011 DetroitAutoShow, he told us that the Buick Verano GS is something that GM is toying with. Seeing as the Verano is based on the Cruze, were pretty excited to see what Welburn and his team come up with.

Isn't a ~250hp rating pretty typical for 2 liter turbo engines now?

If this proves true, it would go a long way to establishing this as more than just an expensive chevy.

250 HP in a compact car is not run of the mill. Especially for a Buick. This is an elegant looking car. I think Buick is going to see a revival like Caddy saw. All their cars are beautiful.

I agree. I remember when the Enclave first came out, and how it was such a big improvement stylistically over anything else in their lineup. It really did show a new direction, and now that they seem to be drawing on that for cars with proportions more natural for it than a crossover, i think they look great.

And considering this is a car on the cruze platform, i don't think it should be compared to cars the size of the new sonata, and a few others with turbo-fours putting out more power. 250hp is pretty good.

not for a Buick.

standard Buick 2 liter turbo should be 180hp. This is huge news!

seriously though, I bet this is the same engine they used in the saturn sky redline, and pontiac solstice turbo.

2 liter, direct injected twin scroll turbo.

I think in those it was making 260 though.

not too shabby fuel economy for that much power either.

That is a handsome car.

If I were looking to cruise in style while saving some $$ I'd definitely consider it.

Agreed - in fact to my eye the Buick's look much nicer than the current Caddy's. They are stately and elegant contrasted with Cadillac's muscular angles and creases.

Agreed on the looks. I'm already on the record as liking the Regal though I still think it needs AWD if not RWD. If quality improves and they can market past the "senior citizens' car" reputation they could do really well.

when the actual specs show fwd/auto only and 3800 lbs it will be much less exciting than the article would have you believe

Isn't that what happened with the Regal GS?

There's not much chance a car this small will weigh 3800 lbs is there?

And I'm sorry, I always come down on the side of "why does everything need to be RWD?"

I know very few cars are as good as the integra from the 90s that was in that other thread on here, but that was FWD. The acuras of newer vintage that everyone loves are FWD.

If nobody told you, and you were just driving to the mall 10 miles away, who would really care? Unless you think you're going to track a buick, i think it's a pointless complaint.

I agree AWD would be nice, but even then, not for handling, but for all weather versatility. I'd bet there's a VERY small percentage of people, even in a place for enthusiasts like NASIOC, that would ever drive a car in such a way that it matters on dry roads. This FWD car I drive now is lightweight, good sporty suspension, sorta quickish, and has a 6 spd. My ownership of this FWD car is after a RWD vette, AWD saabaru, RWD vette, and RWD blazer. I never sit around and think, 'man I wish that car was RWD.'
