Default 93 Legacy Starter Problems

I just found out my starter appears to be bad. It has this horrible whining noise while driving, even sitting. I used an automotive stethoscope and the rear of the starter (where I guess the bendix would be?) is where the noise is coming from. Do I just need to replace the whole starter?

Is the starter engaging even without turning the key?

How many miles on the car?

All of my older Legacy's needed a new starter at around 150,000 miles.

I'd just replace it, it's probably due.
