Default 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 to Have Camaro ZL1–Slapping 600-Plus Horsepower

Quote:
Only a month after the unveiling of the 550-plus-hp 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, word is leaking out that Ford will substantially advance the muscle-car wars with a 2013 Shelby GT500 making a pants-bursting 600-plus horsepower.

Our well-informed sources say the stratospheric output figure, which could be as high as 620 horses, is the result of boring out the current 5.4-liter V-8 to 5.8 liters and swapping the existing Eaton M112 supercharger for the same firm’s more-efficient and quieter TVS unit. This supercharger, with its four-lobe rotors, is the blower of choice for the Audi S4, Cadillac CTS-V, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and, interestingly, the Camaro ZL1.

The 5.4-liter in the current GT500 makes an already pretty absurd 550 hp.

The car rips to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 12.4. Based solely on the horsepower increase, we estimate that the 2013 model will drop almost half a second through the quarter, for a 12.0-second run. As it is already traction limited, we don’t see the 0-to-60 number changing much. We do, however, anticipate that it’ll be a straight-up bitch to launch consistently, at least without the addition of a launch-control system. If it isn’t limited to 155 mph, as the current car is, the 2013 GT500 should be capable of topping 190 mph.

Like all 2013 Mustangs, the GT500 will sport a body altered with the goal of looking somewhat less retro and more modern and edgy, according to sources. And, yes, we do take “modern” to imply the addition of LEDs to the head- and taillight assemblies. You won’t see any of the new bodywork in the spy photos here. This powertrain mule caught today in Dearborn wears familiar bodywork (and 2011 Mustang GT headlights) but rides very low over a set of current GT500 Performance package wheels. What won’t change is the basic rear-suspension design. That’s right: This most insanely powerful of Mustangs will keep its live axle. It’ll just be a little, er, livelier.

The new model is, of course, still a long way off. Hell, the 2012 ZL1 that it’s intended to battle won’t go on sale for another 11 or so months. Expect the 2013 GT500 about 10 months after that, leaving you plenty of time to save your dollars. You’re going to need about 60,000 of them to buy one.

Could this be the first performance car rated at 600 horsepower that only runs 12's ?

No, Supras were the same.

I like how they spray painted the camo on instead of doing vinyl.

I'm talking about completely stock vehicles. For what it's worth, if you look at the magazine times the original Mark IV Supra TT was faster in a straight line than all of its Japanese competitors.

my 11 GT went 12.9, stock, with 235s in back, and a 2.0 60ft...... 200 more hp and it will run mid to low 11. I dont think these guys launched a new stang much, I had no problem repeating high 1.9s to low 2.0s with stock all seasons....

I'm surprised that they will continue to use the 5.4L V8 (bored out), instead of the newer, more powerful, more efficient, Coyote 5.0L V8. With it currently making 400+HP NA, adding a supercharger would easily get it 500+HP. Tuning and/or boring it out would get it around 600HP and Ford will be able to dump the old anchor.

^ well these are internet rumors. I too find it strange that Ford would increase displacement and use a larger blower when the industry trend is toward downsizing. But if they think people will pay the gas guzzler tax then maybe it's not that important.

I am surprised at this too. Although I believe the raptor engine is of the same engine family as the 5.4?

Time will tell what the engine will be. We expect this from Ford though, that they will build one to out power the ZL1.

If you can buy a 60k+ car, you can afford, and expect to pay, the fuel.

No kidding. 12.0 is a ridiculously conservative estimate considering the current GT500s are easily running 12.0s-12.2s and even some guys with stock GTs are claiming 12.4s.

If this car isn't running 11.6s with someone who knows what they're doing behind the wheel, I'll be incredibly surprised.

Again, read above. This article was written by someone who obviously doesn't know what they're talking about.

Yeah, because the ZL1 has been out for decades now, right?

This car needs 600hp just to keep up with a base Corvette. It still will probably loose a 60-130 pull to boot.

These cars (mustang/camaro/challanger) make great power and look cool, but that's about it. Oh, and the amount of options packages available (oem & aftermarket).

Sooo... 2014 and we get the Camaro LS9? Never thought I'd see that one happen.

Ficksed that for you. As it stands now, the current GT500 isn't much slower than a Z06(couple tenths of second and a couple mphs). I can't imagine the new one is going to be any slower than the Z06, let alone a garden variety, base 'vette.

Well, your paradigm might be a bit different than mine considering my parents can't afford to buy me a Viper or a Lamborghini, nor would I want them to. But these cars are very affordable performance for the common man that will run with cars twice their price.

Since when is a Mustang GT that will lap a road course with an M3 just a car "that makes great power and looks cool"? Or the ZL1 which is likely to cannibalize a lot of sales from the base 'vette? The new GT500 in this article that will be as fast if not faster(in a straight line at least) than a Z06, etc?

Seriously. I imagine that these will continue to sound great though, first time I heard a modified GT500 driving by... wonderful.
