Rally Stuff Global Rallycross Championship series

Taking a break from its endless stream of SportsCenter, followed by SportsCenter, followed by NFL Draft analysis, followed by SportsCenter, ESPN will be running the Global Rally Championship this Spring and Summer.

The Global Rally Championship will be a series of sprint-style races like the ones featured at last year's Summer X-Games, only spread out over an entire season, and utilizing tracks other than the L.A. Coliseum.

The courses will combine dirt, gravel and pavement stages to keep everything as unpredictable as possible. The cars will be the same mix of Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Mitsubishi Lancer and Ford Fiesta compacts that ran at X-Games, which means they sport ludicrous power figures and should hit 60 in just over two seconds.

Anyone going to the Irwindale event? I'm going to try to make it. I found a sneak peek at Stephan Verdier's car:

It's on livestream right now....

http://www.livestream.com/xgames?lsci_op=301400022

But they keep cutting the feeds!! Argh!!

Rhys Millen starts up for quals and then they cut it! Starts interviewing Gronholm and after just a couple questions they cut it! WTF?

Is it just me, or is the gap jump (ala xgames) really unnecessarily dangerous for a rallycross?

There hasn't been a jump in the RA Eurorallycross stuff they have been doing, so I can only assume that the GRC won't have one either.

You didn't look at the Livestream did you... there is a gap jump.

Gronholm was even interviewed and he expressed he'd never done something like this in a car; motorcycle, yes, but not a car.

From the official site:

Quote:
THE REVOLUTION
LOCATION | Irwindale Speedway: Irwindale, CA
DATE | March 25-26
CONDITIONS | Oval meets rallycross: 50 per cent dirt, 50 per cent tarmac; 70′ gap jump
The first stop in the new Global RallyCross Championship, this event transforms Irwindale Speedway’s small oval track into a mixed dirt and tarmac rallycross course. Competitors looking for a chance to compete at X Games this summer meet to race for the first time. The highlight of the event is a huge, 70-foot gap jump, seen here for the first time in any motorsport competition outside of X Games.

I was at the first event last year. This doesn't look very crowded, also no SRTUSA... And the one announcer is a retard. - "So RWD might be faster off the line, but the 2WD cars will definitely handle better in that long tarmac turn?"

I can't believe the official Global Rallycross twitter feed is NOT live updated with what's going on. Seriously?

2wd final should be interesting...Matthew Johnson in the RX-8 vs. Dillon Van Way in the turbocharged Focus.

They said Subaru will be there tomorrow. They were working some problems out of Dave Mirra's car and didn't want to compete if it wasn't going to be just right. Today was just two cars at a time, tomorrow will be six wide.

wow it's hard for a sport to get popular in the US when the broadcasting is ghetto. bad commentators, limited computer overlay/animations. i tried watching it on espn3 but the highlights on youtube much > espn3. see my next post below for the xgames16 rally fail as well

dave mirra finishes race on broken suspension

mirra breaks suspension again (diff race)
the evo looks like the fender lining came off, making it crash (commentators suck)

the AWD championship race

and here is espn xgames terrible broadcasting on their first ever rally events... this makes me embarrassed. europeans must be thinking "go back to nascar, your left turn only motorsport". such FAIL

Xgames16 Rally-Race (2 car final)

Xgames16 SuperRally (Rallycross - 4 car final)

Quote:
being confused is a understatement if you watch this. none of the spectators gathered in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum knew who had won and even the event's announcers were unsure whether to declare frontrunner Foust the winner. such FAIL

what happened is... the "rally race" the course layout was bad and none of the drivers really knew the course. tanner won by default cause deegan drove the wrong way, getting him a red flag. shoddy broadcasting/cameras made the experience that much worse... in the "superrally" rallycross the lap count on the tv was wrong. never counted the 1st lap, so was always 1 behind. "the announcers really screwed this one up...Not realizing that they're on the final lap, saying Deegan still had to hit the joker (which he did on lap 3 as he announced!), talking about the wrong guys parts falling off...and kinda sad when he thought Tanner was spinning out of control during a celebration. Pretty bad considering you have to focus for a total of about 3 minutes, even if it is a new event."
