Default carbon fiber projector retrofits, let's get creative

well i really miss the bugeye projector look, but don't want to drop an arm and a leg for a set of edm headlights. i also hate that i have hid's in halogen reflectors. so i was contemplating a retrofit, and doing either real carbon fiber or 3m di-noc on the inside of the old lights rather that spraying them flat black or leaving them chrome.

looking for more ideas, thinking of using these projectors: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...roducts_id=101

and some kind of either home made shroud or one of theirs, i havn't seen anyone do CF on insides of headlights yet but think it would look great.

i know one of the guys at the in and out Thursdays UC meets does some retrofitting, anyone else ever done it and want to bounce some ideas off each other feel free to chime in, or just if you had some ideas or could photoshop cf into bugeye headlights. also concerned about fading, if htey yellowed like half the cf out there then it would look fugly but i was also thinking of restoring the lenses and having them uv clearcoated and maybe that would help.

[i'm picky about cf too, i htink it works great as an accent more than main look, love it when people get a cf wing and paint it but tape off the actuall wing part so it stays cf (think just the actual top wing on the sti wing, the cf mini wing on the 07 sti's but the end plates are painted, etc..), or when people do a cf stock hood and tape off some of the cf to give the illusion that the cf was painted on, for example: just a cf hoodscoop doesn't really do it for me, looks out of place.]

let the brainstorming begin

Check out the stratus. That is the first cf projector look I have seen except for doing a wrap of morettas or prodrive uk300s.

And the fx-rs are good. And I can get them for you cheaper. I have a discount from the retro fit source. You can also look into the mini morimotos... Either h1 or d2s.

For shrouds anything works. I have used both E55 & ocular with them turning out good.

haha i did see those on there actually, so APART from that set I've never seen it done. i would shoot for a darker cf though. really looking at the wrap do you know if the whole reflector comes out of the bugeye lights? otherwise i'd probably want to bondo it smooth rather than faceted. i saw the mini morimotos but don't know anything about them, i'll have to look into it.

I have those FX-R on my GC. I love them. The color is amazing. I'll post up some pics tomorrow for you. As for the Di-Noc, it would only look good for a few days because they would actually melt right by the projectors and either lift up or just burn into flat black without no weaving pattern anymore. With CF it would work, but for an overlay or vacuum method, it is still a pain in the butt to do. If you search on the G35 forum there is one that has been done.

They shroud wont melt. But if you would like too see for yourself. Take some 3m Di-Noc and take a blow dyer to it for about a minute or two in a spot. You will see it lose all of its weave pattern

Yeah Di-Noc isn't good with heat at all. And if you search the Lights thread you will answer your own question about the reflector coming out.

If you want help/haven't ever taken apart headlights before you could come over and I can show you how to do it. I can do it pretty much in my sleep in 20 mins. (10 mins a piece in the oven...)

Also if you are wanting to do something with weave I would try this technique:

I would watch the 2nd/3rd video and see what he does with the vacuum/acrylic. Maybe you could do that then just do a weave over it. Wouldn't be too hard, just takes time practicing

Yeah I have seen that stuff... They just put the pattern down on the water, put the part in, then bake it... That could be cool too.

Yea and they've shown pics of intakes and guns so there is some give on the heat issue. Also there are videos on you tube. Super easy to do
