Default Merc C63 AMG coupe revealed

Quote:
Mercedes is aiming to outgun BMW’s M3 coupé and the Audi RS5 with this hardcore AMG version of its recently launched two-door C-class.
The C63 AMG coupé produces up to 480bhp from its normally aspirated V8 motor, putting it well clear of its two German rivals and giving the model raw acceleration that wouldn’t disgrace a mid-engined supercar.

Unlike the recent CLS AMG, the C-class coupé from Mercedes’ in-house tuning division sticks with the familiar 6.2-litre, normally aspirated V8 engine. In the latest spec, the unit produces 451bhp and 443lb ft, more power and considerably more torque than the BMW (295lb ft) or the Audi (317lb ft). That’s enough to take the C-class from 0-62mph in 4.5sec, with a limited top speed of 155mph.

See official pics of the Merc C63 AMG coupe
However, Mercedes will also offer an AMG Performance Package for the car, swapping the front brakes for composite items, adding interior flourishes and adopting the pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft from the version of the engine used in the gullwing SLS AMG supercar. The tweaks increase power to 480bhp (torque stays the same), cutting a further 0.1sec from the 0-62mph time.

Just one transmission is available: AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift automatic. It offers a number of modes, accessed via a rotary controller (another SLS AMG carryover), that cut shift times to as little as 100ms. There’s also launch control.

The C63 AMG coupé gets a different chassis set-up from the regular two-doors, with three-link front suspension, multi-link rear suspension and wider track at both ends. There’s also more negative camber, thicker anti-roll bars and revised spring and damper rates.

The visual cues include an AMG front splitter, LED daytime running lights, side air vents, five-spoke AMG alloy wheels, bespoke side sill panels, a rear diffuser and twin chrome exhaust tips.

Interior features include an AMG performance steering wheel (coated in Alcantara if you specify the Performance Package), metallic trim, AMG sports seats, covered with a new breathable man-made fibre called Dinamica, and piano black finish on the instrument panel.
The C63 AMG coupé will be officially launched in July, around a month after the regular two-doors. Final prices have yet to be specified, but expect them to be around the same figure as the M3 coupé’s £57,190 sticker.

I like it, it just doesn't seems as aggressive as the old 4 door C63 AMG, not sure what it is though.

The 4 door will still be available. I'm starting to convince myself that I need the new 2012 4 door now that it has DSG (so both me and my wife can drive it). I'll wait for the NYIAS to see if anyone comes out with something AWD that works for me (STi?). I can't justify spending a similar amount on an S4 when a new C63 would just destroy it in most conditions.

Agreed... the lines on it look really soft.

I've been very happy with MB vehicle design as of recently. I think the bodies look good, particularly on the C-class vehicles.

Me too... I'm a big fan of the current C, although the tails are a bit too 2003 Camry-like for my liking. Wish they were a little less generic looking.

The slash-up headlights seem to be all the rage. I think Infiniti started it.... then Subaru did it with the Legacy.... and now M-B has caught on.

Being an AMG model with Texas power, this thing could have used a bit wider rear fenders...it doesn't stand out as much as some of their other AMG cars. Nevertheless, this is a pretty car.

Honda claims it's V6 Accord has racing pedigree... yeah.

This is the car the Accord coupe wishes it were, and they look too similar to be a coincidence.

If MB didn't want to look like an accord coupe, they would have done something differently than the little up-bevel at the trailing end of the quarter window.

I actually wonder if somehow they use the same glass supplier and part number for that quarter window... (j/k, but barely.)

Love the recent MB interior. They are really reviving the old quality feel.

So, does this thing have shorter wheelbase than the C sedan? Cuz the E class coupe has the same wheelbase as the C sedan.

I would imagine that the new C-coupe is more compact than the C-sedan/E-coupe.

I am not all that enamored with M-B... they are fine, but not something I drool over.

But I do wish more companies would get M-B's hint with what they have done with the E-coupe, based on the C-chassis, with E-class features.

Coupes should be smaller than their sedan counterparts, and basing the coupes on the next-size-down chassis is a way to do that well.

Audi could do that with the A5, pairing it to the A6 in terms of price and features, but still built similarly to the A4, then putting a base 2.0T version of the Quattro Sport concept as the smaller-than-A4 coupe version.

Subaru could do the same thing with an Impreza chassis coupe, with Legacy grade amenities, and H6 engine as an option choice, especially above the market position of the upcoming RWD coupe platform.

coupes splitting the sedan difference gap makes a lot of sense, and M-B has done it with the current E-class coupe.

Just what is the advantage of buying the coupe C63 over the sedan C63?

Darken the paint and put wheels with thicker spokes on and it would be closer.

Having a coupe if you want a coupe.

It is probably a bit more space efficient, lighter, and thus perhaps a bit faster for being lighter and more aerodynamic.

If you don't need a sedan, and you like MBs, I would think this would be somewhat appealing.

If you do need a sedan, they offer that, also.

This is a THREAD about A COUPE.

The question was ASKED. I answered it.

Can the persecution stop at some point?

If you people hate discussing coupes so much, why are you even paying attention to a thread entitled "Merc C63 AMG coupe revealed"

Yes these look more than passing similar at the windows and the character lines. At least they don't use BMWs C-pillar Hofmeister kink which they and their imitators have done to death.

Accord coupe better integrates the door handle but has those flat wheel arches/flares that don't appeal and when taken to the extreme (*cough*Legacy and Outback*cough*) are unattractive and make the wheels look smaller than they are.
