Hi Dan,
I have a 2011 WRX with fully stock suspension (for now), and I'm looking to get some 17" wheels for the summer, AutoX and maybe tracking. I'd rather not have my fenders rolled, and after bouncing around the thread I've figured I can get away with 17x9 rims (with at least a 35mm offset) running my OEM Dunlop 235/45/17s. I intend on using up the Dunlops and then putting on the widest tire I can on the 17x9 rim without rolled fenders. Assuming a 17x9 +35 rim, my math tells me the rim will stick out an extra ~31mm (1/2” from rim + 53-35 offset change). Will I (maybe) need to roll my fenders with this rim AND the following tires?:
a) OEM Dunlop 235/45/17s ?
b) brand-TBD 255/40/17s ?
c) 265-anything?

Also, I am planning suspension and brake upgrades in a couple of years (GTWORX/RCE or coilovers; Wilwood or used Brembo brakes), and I’d like to know if these will work with my above tire/rim choices without rolling fenders. FYI the rims I’m eyeing are the Rota IK-R and your own Mach V Awesome.

Thanks in advance for the info, and for this comprehensive (and HUUGE) thread. I referred to post #459 in particular for my question.

-Vik

Because of the low +35 offset, I think you'll have to roll with anything larger than 235/45R17, and you MIGHT have to roll even with the 235 once the car is lower. For an easier time fitting larger tires, get a higher offset wheel. (+42 would be better, hint, hint.)

Thank you Dan, I'll look for 17x9s with higher offsets and consider rolling my rear fenders next year. Just to confirm, I will NOT need to roll my fronts with a tire size less than 265-wide?

Nice rims... but just cant stop wondering that tires are too narrow for such wide wheels. You can run this wide tire on a stock rim - kinda defeats the purpose of having such a wide wheel.

For the stretch. I prefer this over a meaty looking setup. Everyone's different.

I think rokjitt's tires are the Dunlop SP600 that come stock with the 08+ STi's. So he's probably using it until its done, then move on to the tire size of his choice.

I'm getting a set of RPF1 17x8.5 +40 along with 255/40/17. Should I just get th +30 offset or the +40 is fine? This will be my dedicated track set. I'm concerned about damaging my hubs and axle with my current heavy a$$ 18x9.5 +35 (rotas). Any thoughts? I also plan on getting brembos F/R.

Thank yoU!

18x9.5 rotas are actually fairly light considering their size.

and the +40 would be better.

Hmm. At +35, I can't say that for sure. 255 is probably safe.

This information is probably already well known but....

17x8 Drag dr-31 47 offset....265 star specs. Autox purposes only. Yes they fit, no they don't rub, yes they are "pinched"...and yes they perform great...for autox. people run Hoosier A6's 275 and 295 sizes without rubbing or issues as well.

I wouldn't recommend this setup for street or track use, although I am sure they would be fine for either, just not ideal. A 245 would probably be better for those needs on an 8" wheel. On a 9" wheel I would run a 265 all day long.

Right up above, a few posts back, Gregor91 reported that 18x8.5 +35 with 245/40R18 rubs in the rear and requires rolling. Ignoring differences in wheel width, the same tire at the same offset will give the same result. I would not run narrower than 245/40R18 on a 9.5" wheel, so it sounds like that's your tire, since wider would result in more rubbing. As to "how much rolling," rolling is pretty much all or nothing -- you roll the rear lip and it's done, there's not a more or less. Some people talk about "pulling" the fender for more clearance, which is more drastic and usually results in dimpled or wrinkled body work.

Wheels: Enkei NT-03, 18x9.5 +40mm 5x100, Flat black
Tires: Michelin Pilot Super Sports 265/35/18
Fender Mods: Roll all around (suggested by IAG)
Suspension: Stock (will be on Feal 441's in a week, approx 1-2" drop)

I really hope the roll I have will be sufficient when I install the coilovers.
