Default stock rs intake piping... what's w/ all the bypass boxes?

okay.. even though I will soon be investing in an aftermarket intake most likely,

I just had one of those curiosity questions...

Along the stock plastic intake pipe, there's a series of like 3 box bypass deals hanging down off of the pipe..

what's the deal? these all can't be for sucking up puddle water.. I don't imagine going THAT far off-road..

just wondering,

I don't really know what their purpose is either. Supposedly to silence the intake sound for the typical customer. Most people don't know cars or the sounds they make, the intake sound might worry them, then they'll take it to the dealer and say something is wrong. While also silencing things, they also do a good job of slowing the airflow to your engine, damn boxes .

Partially for sound, partially for air flow (the pipes seem to disperse some of the resonation from the intake manifold or something like that)

Sound reduction. Feel free to take it all out

It does make it sound a little nicer at wot
