Default Subaru vs. Z06s 1:57 In Car Video From VIR NASA March Madness!

It's definitely become a Subaru vs. Corvette battle here on the east coast in the NASA Mid Atlantic Region. In TTU me and Gil Smith in his Z06 have gone win for win, track record for track record.

In TTA or ST2 it's been "Wally" in his Z06 and now Justin Mathews in his now ST2 power level STi duking it out. Wally took the win over Mathews in ST2 after Justin qualified first with an impressive 2:01.xx but the veteran took the lead into turn one and held on for the win while Justin unfortunately suffered a mechanical.

With cloudy, cold, and possibly wet weather coming I knew I needed to charge hard from the get go. Gil Smith qualified first with 1:58.7 to my 1:59.9. As we lined up for Timed Session 1 I finally drove this car in anger! It felt good, and I felt good and she didn't disappoint me clicking off a 1:57.1 to Gil Smiths very impressive 1:57.4

YouTube:

My long time goal of breaking the 1:58 mark at VIR has finally been realized. Very happy for sure! I'm really happy to have done this in my current NASA TTU trim which has me limited to 510 whp. How fast is this time? Here are some of the more popular cars we are familiar with:

Cyber EVO 1:55 Driver Tarzan Yamada (Unofficial time GT Live Time Attack Unlimited)
AMS EVO 8 1:57.9 Driver Paul Gerrard (Redline Time Attack Unlimited)
Topspeed RS 1:58.540 Driver Luke Russell (Redline Time Attack Unlimited)
Crawford 08 STi 1:58.929 Driver Tarzan Yamada (Redline Time Attack Unlimited)
C-West BC S2000 2:00.781 Driver Tyler McQuarrie (Redline Time Attack Unlimited)
Turn In Concepts 2:01.360 Driver Tony Wiesenhahn (UTCC Challenge)

I've got a few events coming up where I'll unleash 700 whp to see how far we can take the STi Typically +100 whp is worth +2 seconds a lap at VIR.

Thanks,
Phil Grabow

Kick ass! I just got done listening to the vette guys bragging about getting the TTA record back. Phil, your video makes it look like you're driving a waterbed.

Yeah I've tightened and adjusted it every which way. The mount to the cage is solid but the gopro has these arms to angle it the way you want and I think it flexes and then the image stabilization effects the picture. Or maybe I'm just hitting warp speed

Yeah, we try to avoid the plastic GoPro bits, and we always try to keep any extension as short as possible.

There is no Image Stabilization in the GoPro. What you are seeing is the "jello" effect from it's "rolling shutter."

I think I saw a better cage mount somewhere online.

I'm running Hoosier R80 285/645-18 on Rota DPT 18x10 et35 and 8mm spacers.

Has anyone used this roll cage mount from GoPro with any improvement?

For $29 it's worth trying but there is also this for $100:

It's actually too solid of a mount. The vibration is being transferred into the camera. It's much worse in formula and sports racers where the engine is mounted directly to the chassis not through any type of engine mount. That's what's so nice about those big I/O port mounts. They're solid but they have a huge chunk of polyurethane to dampen that. It's what makes a bullet camera setup so nice.

I think it's a wind buffeting issue as it only happens in the higher gears. If it was vibration it would be more consistent so I just think for now shortening the mount and going stiffer is the best option. If that doesn't work then I might be able to use some rubber between the mount and the cage tubing.

I'm certainly not a perfect driver, so take this with a grain of salt, but it seems like you're downshifting too early and/or over-revving when you blip the throttle. You're often hitting the rev limiter when you downshift. It seems like in all cases you've got time from when you get into the lower gear until you turn in, so it seems to me that you could delay your downshifts just a bit and make life a little easier for yer motor.

Fun video to watch!

Pat
