Default Formula One: The Killer Years

Heads up for those of a 'torrent' persuasion. The BBC have just shown a documentary about F1 in the 60's and early 70's and the drivers' fight for safety rules in a time when the cars were hitting 200mph, had no safety features at all and drivers had less than 50% chance of surviving their careers.

Unbelievable now that drivers were vilified for wanting to improve safety and boycotting GPs. Some of the stories are heartbreaking, others funny in a sad way (ambulances taking drivers to closed hospitals, borrowing tools from spectators to extract drivers).

Great interviews with Stewart, Ickx, Fittipaldi, Surtees. And some gnarly footage that'll bring a tear to your eye.

If you love F1, this is a must watch.

Drivers really haven't learned. Look at all the whining F1 drivers made when HANS was required, and how everyone complained when the new helmets were brought into place.

Sounds interesting, thanks! I watched a Youtube video a few weeks ago chronicling all F1 fatalities as I start to learn about the sport and its history. The Roger Williamson footage was gut wrenching.

Not the most cheerful documentary....but definitely gives perspective on how good we have it now - we can go to the start line and expect that we will walk away from a serious crash.

If you haven't watched it yet - look for "Shell History of Motor Racing". Probably the best racing documentary I have ever seen.

Watched it last night. Definitely depicts the dark times of the sport. I actually teared up watching David Purley attemping to rescue Robert Williamson at Zandvoort in '73.

Something that stuck with me though, was the young girl's response when asked "Do you have a favorite driver?" Her reply, "not anymore."

Yeah, not for those with a weak stomach. Really important to see the history of the sport and that the safety that we have now was fought for, not a given. It's amazing that so many of the drivers of that era are still alive today.

all i can say is wow the cars were beautiful the tracks were beautiful but at what cost? formula one lost a lot of great drivers in that era so sad. watching the Robert Williamson footage was shocking! the main guy from lotus must of had depression since most of his drivers died.

Thanks for posting that was an excellent documentary. I am so glad that I have an over built roll cage in my race car and a fire suppression system. Just crazy to think that it was normal to have a driver lose their life and the race continued on.

waching now. great find. I have the autobiography of Jackie Stewart which covers a lot about driver safety too, seeing as he's the one who pushed for the changes the most

Well, at least not on iPlayer in the U.S. The last time I checked I thought it was a rule that we couldn't get any of the iPlayer items here in the states.

I just saw this the other night. Pretty sobering about how much it takes to get people to invest in safety.

For anyone who does any sort of competitive driving I recommend this documentary. It's a good one.

Saw this the other night. Those were very tragic years and the lives of many great drivers were lost. Dr. Sidney Watkins book Life at the Limit, is a very good read.
Amazon.com: Life at the Limit: Triumph and Tragedy in Formula One (9780330351393): Professor Sid Watkins, Niki Lauda: BooksAmazon.com: Life at the Limit: Triumph and Tragedy in Formula One (9780330351393): Professor Sid Watkins, Niki Lauda: Books
It takes up where this film leaves off.
