Default Opinion pleeezzee? Mr Exhaust Sys. or Custom Cat Back ?

Ok here's my dilema. I am torn between getting a full mrt exhaust system or custom SS cat back with a titanium muffler. The cat back would be 2.5" in diameter as opposed to the 2.25" , am not sure how this affects performance you may chime in on this too. It would also be cheaper right now (Money is an object need other parts you know ). I do have future plas to Supercharge the car hopefully early-mid next year whenever templar's SC is done.

Any $.02 ???? am beggining to develop a migraine over this !

If you plan to supercharge, don't get the MRT. It is very good for a stock cammed NA car, but even with spicy cams it appears not to be the best solution due to the 2.25" pipe diameter. A supercharger will only be worse.

so it would be better to do the 2.5" catback then. How would that affect performance until I can get an SC ? I have hard many different tales of the tape regarding how you'll lose more TQ and so forth ? any truth to this ?

Going with a 2.5 in exhaust vs a 2.25 in exhaust isn't going to have any real noticeable negative effects...I believe. You may loose a little off the low end and not quite rev up as quickly but I feel it won't be enough for you to notice...and if you put on a nice smooth flowing intake I doubt you will notice anything at all.

But I agree with Section 8...if you are going to SC I'd go with the larger 2.5 exhaust. I'd do head work as well, of course.

custon bent mandrel is the way to go, in my opinion. Less $$, perfect fit, and you have your choice of any muffler to weld on to it. I would also have to concur with the 2.5" piping if you are planning on supercharging it. good luck

I would highly recommend the MRT Header and Cat section. Actually just the header section. I believe there would be better gains with a 2 in 1 out style cat then the 1 in 1 out design MRT has chosen. Beyond that the MRT header design is the absolute best design for even linear exhaust flow. A 2.5" cat back would probably be beneficial to even an NA EJ25. I think it was SCC that did direct comparison tests on multiple 4 cylinder cars comparing 2.25" cat-backs to 2.5" pipes. They found much better top end gains with gains down low similar to the 2.25" piped models.

Anyway whatever you do, supercharged or not, don't buy the MRT muffler. Its standard reversion type muffler that even sounds restrictive. Go buy a nice cheap 2.5" stainless muffler that allows the exhaust to flow more freely. I bought a stainless Powertech from Ebay for $80 + shipping. It looks/works/sounds great.

I have to confess that the MRT header design really smooths out the otherwise sputtery and aggressive sounding motorcycle like exhaust pulses. Thats OK it still sounds way better then any other 4 cylinder out there and makes more power then most of them with this exhaust

MY99 2.5GT : Thanks. I'll go with the Custom Cat Back first and look into an MRT header/Cat combo later since those thing are hard to find. I sent an email out to Brian @ lagnston Subaru but it'll probably be awhile.

and yeah I'll post pics of my exhaust (dual titanium tips HEE HEE

) in the exhaust thread so you can see. Now I just gotta look into resonators to shut that bad boy up

Wow...thanks Karlos! I really appreciate that. I've tried my best to pick up as much knowledge as possible from the posts here...so in a lot of ways I'm just restating a lot that's been said in the past. But I have learned a lot and even more importantly, had some first hand experiences.

Thanks!

dcrawford: No problem. I just ordered my muffler from Speed Pro 1. When it gets here and its installed hopefully with a week along with the intake I'll post some photos. I have yet to see a pic of a dual titanium (w/blue tint thing on the end) tip exhaust on here. It'll be interesting.

A titanium exhaust should look and be SWEET. I can't wait to see the pics.
