Default Hahaha...24 Hours of Lemons was Awesome! Video Inside...

I recently raced in the 24 Hours of Lemons race at Infineon Raceway. I haven't raced with these guys since 2007. If you're not familiar with the series, competitors race $500 piece of crap cars against each other, and each team must have a "theme" and dress the part (keeps the atmosphere pretty light-hearted). Our cars are 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R's and done up as Spinal Crap and Deaf Leppard. Teams are encouraged to dress the part around the paddock.

You MUST have a competition racing license in order to participate. If you do not have a competition racing license, you may buy one from 24 Hours of Lemons for $50. Yes, that means people with zero racing experience can race in a $500 junker. 185 cars were entered for this race and we were all on track at the same time! As you can imagine, it gets pretty crazy out there on track with driver skill ranging from absolute noob to professional racers.

If this sounds like fun to you, check out 24 Hours of Lemons. The rulebook is definitely worth a read because they are hilarious!

Here's a photo of the Deaf Leppard car I drove.

Despite the goofiness of the whole thing, there was actually some great racing to be had. Here is a video clip from a great battle I had with an old VW Rabbit and a Datsun 510.

If you want to see it in HD, click on the video and bump up the resolution in YouTube.

We ended up finishing in 4th place overall. Fun stuff!

Gary

We have an RX7 for LeMons. Super fun, even though we tend to eat transmissions.

Thanks for posting the video Gary. You are one of my favorite drivers to watch. Your talent and experience shows every time you get behind the wheel. Looks like a lot of fun. Nice work.

nice. driving. gary! you're right, there's some real racing happening out there, nevermind that it's to get around an enterprise crx, or a two-story beetle, or a camaro with big horns on it's roof, or a mustang with a rainbow sharkfin... heh. but seriously, that's like a clinic on driving through traffic. great driving man. i'm still proud to be one of the few who got to build a car for you! car didn't do so well, but proud nonetheless. (this is jingle james from esx) oh, and give marshall my best too!

Thanks bouse1! The main reason this stuff is so fun for me is because it's so off the wall. You can't rely on other drivers to do the "right" thing and you always have to be on your toes and trying to work out the best way past all this traffic without losing momentum. It's like constantly flowing puzzle. I've got an hour and 50 minutes of this stint on DVD and there are some pretty wacky lines I came up with to get past other drivers.

sebtarta,

I'm usually pretty relaxed in the car, but it seemed more so in this video. I think it mostly comes down to me not being too far away from the steering wheel for my comfort, so I'm just sort of reaching out pretty far and doing stuff with the wheel as well as I can.

I feel like I need to point out that I do not typically shuffle steer, and I never teach shuffle steering. I am ANTI-shuffle steer! I always keep my hands at 9 and 3.

However, when the kitchen chair cushion that's behind your back is out of spec, some times you just have to do what you can, you know?

James! How are you?! What are you doing out on the east coast?

Man, with Long Beach coming up I'm reminiscing about those days a lot. Wish we could be doing it again!

I'll let Marshall know you said "hi". We'll have the Scion tC out on track again shortly.

Awesome vid Gary. So entertaining.

Curious, is it a rule that cars have no windows (besides windshield)? Every Lemons car I've seen was sans windows.

Cool man! You think you'll parlay that Scion tC into one of those FT-86's when they come out? Hmm?

Yeah, my mom passed away recently, so I moved back here to look after my dad. It's a different world out here. These days, I've been watching more racing on the TV than I've ever watched! So yeah, I've been doing some reminiscing too. Heh.

Glass is weight (and can be sold off to pay for new radiator hoses).

So could you do any engine mods or was it just buy a $500 car and gut it?

Anything that fits within the $500 budget or can pass tech by bribing the judges.

Also, after races you are awarded $ allowances with which you can repair or improve your car.
