Default MY02 Air Intake

I just picked up a 2002 GT wagon and am confused about the intake. I thought it pulled through the front fender but, when I opened the hood the snorkel goes right to the front.

The snorkel is rather long snaking from the grill to the pass strut tower to the filter box and then to the intake. It also has an expansion chamber before the filter and a deflector under the hood behind the grill that blocks direct flow into the snorkel.

Anyone mod this system? I was planning on at least a K&N and maybe remove the deflector but, I do not know how sensitive the system is? It there a silencer in there also?

Thanks,

Greg

Larry Ganz sells a CAI on his site. I replaced the stock intake with one of those. Its a pretty simple install - took me all of 20 minutes once I got all of the correct tools. The sound is much deeper at WOT and I would swear that it pulls harder after 4k rpm, but its debateable. For a cheap mod you could go with just a K&N and removing the silencer. Search for "intake silencer" in the Legacy forum and I there is a link in one post to instructions.

I removed the defector and the air chamber for a truer ram air. I also incresed the inlet at the filterbox to 3" and all new 3"tubeing. Works great! Must add about 75hp. jim

The searches that I did kept talking about the silencer inside the pass fender. So I figured that was a MY99 and down?

I will look again. Thanks for the insight.

I just put in the panel K&N filter and left everything else in place stock form and I've noticed little gain, if at all. Though the car does rev up faster and pulls a bit better at 3000rpm+, but gas milage didn't change much. Was thinking to get the 3" piping to duct from fender hole to the airbox when I find some time during weekends...

You need to open the inlet at the airbox to 3" and glue in a piece of tube. Then use ADS drain pipe from Home Depot for the flex section. The air scoop also needs to be enlarged to 3".
