Default S204 Dash Kit on '07 WRX. Question...

After a blown attempt at sanding down the center trim pieces on my '07 WRX and painting them flat black, I decided to order the S204 trim kit from japanparts.com this morning to get the official look.

However, I have one question that I cannot seem to find the answer to: Will my stock shift boot fit perfectly into this kit or is the silver STI shift boot trim required? The only pictures I can find of this kit installed are on STI's with the silver trim. However, when I look at pictures of just the S204 kit packaged, it looks like the silver STI trim isn't required.

If necessary I'll pick up the silver trim as well, but if it is not required then I'd like to forego it.

Thanks for any input.

it should fit fine. there's a small tab- you can see it on your picture, right under the ashtray opening, on the shift boot opening- that your shift boot will "tuck" into.

but it's going to look like you're missing a trim piece.

How expensive could it be to pick up that finisher piece around the boot? Doesn't seem like it could be too much to pick up if it looks weird once installed.

Yeah, it looks like the tabs are the same as my stock piece to fit my shifter boot. I'm hoping the opening for the shift boot is the same size on the S204 piece as it is on my stock piece. From the uninstalled pictures I've seen, it looks exactly the same. I've got my fingers crossed and will know for sure within 14 days.

Yeah, it's only $100 for the trim from fastwrx.com. If necessary I'll buy one but kinda like the all black look so if I can stick with that I'll be happy.

If I'm reading THIS WRITE-UP correctly, the STI shifter trim bolts directly to the shift boot and not the surrounding piece. If that is the case then I should be just fine.

Your WRX trim boot will snap into place just fine it you want that look.
If you want the STI trim ring, be sure to get a 2005-07 STI version. There is a 2004 version of a different shape that will not fit the contours of that S204 trim kit. Don't forget the trim ring hardware (bolts/nuts).
Also order the 2005-07 STI shifter boot. Some have modified the WRX boot to work with the trim ring but since you went the lengths of the S204 trim why not spend the extra ~$40 for the right boot? The photo above is of the correct STI boot, see how the outside frame incorrporates the through holes for the trim ring hardware.
You could also have gone for the S204 shifter ring and boot with your japanparts order. But personally it is a bit much for me. Others like it though and it is sort of unique.

I can whip up some p/n's if you need them, just let me know I have to get to another PC.

Thanks for the info. I actually want to stick with the all black look and don't want that STI silver trim. So as long as my stock boot mounts right to the S204 piece I'll be perfectly happy. I was only going to do the STI trim piece if I had to.

And I agree, the S204 silver trim piece is obnoxious.

Where can I find all black havac knobs? I wanted to do the same, but don't like the silver knob contrast!

You mean the back center pieces for the knobs? You can get them from japanparts.com or flatironstuning.com

Furthermore....If you want them to read temp in degC then you have to source JDM versions (eg. japanparts). If you want them to read in degF then order USDM STI Limited versions (as in the above link). both have the same matte black finish.

The fact that you can't get a black knob ruins this. It's the only thing keeping me away. And the stock headunit. That big block of silver is hideous in an all black trim.

I ordered these and got them installed last week. While these are nice for the price, I'm still going to order the real knob replacements. I noticed that these do not line up 100% perfectly with all the inner cutouts and the edge of the knob. You kind of have to choose which part you want to align perfectly. I chose to make the outer edge of the stickers align perfectly with the edge of the knob. Because of this, a few of the inner cutouts are slightly off and look a little weird. It's hard to notice unless you are really looking but it is off.

On top of that, the stock knobs have 6 or 8 tiny nubs at the bottom. This sticker covers them and creates a small bubble over this area which looks a little strange as well.

As I said, for the price they are great and had I just been sticking with the DIY flat black paint job I wouldn't have cared. But since I went as far as ordering the official pieces, I'm going with the STI Limited knob replacements as well.

I don't get what you mean? On both the STI Limited and S204, the center of the knobs are black but the outer rings are still silver. I think this gives it a great touch, especially considering all the other rings on the dash are silver also.

I do agree with the stock stereo though. The only reason I began this project is because I installed a black bluetooth unit and wanted the trim to match it better.

I agree the HVAC button overlays suck ballz, hardly even worth the effort to cheap out using them over the actual buttons.
I'll say it again if you "must" have the "JDM-yo" Celcius temp scale then order the buttons from Rallispec, japanparts, etc. I'd actaully just order the temp button then get the other buttons from your USDM Subaru parts dealer (same stuff).

If you prefer the Ferinheight temp scale then order the buttons from a 2007 STI Limited.
- KNOB BLK TEMP F #72363FE140 (HVAC temp button - right) x 1
- KNOB BLK #72363FE110 (HVAC mode button - left) x 1
- KNOB BLK FAN #72363FE130 (HVAC fan button - center) x 1
- DIAL BLK SML #72324FE080 (HVAC mode and temp dial - left and right) x 2
- DIAL BLK SML #72324FE090 (HVAC fan dial - center) x 1

I have photos HERE showing some differences and part numbers for most of them. If you are not keen on the bright silver dials then consider re-using the slightly darker WRX dials. I rocked that look for a few years.

Scooter it looks great. Seems expensive but changing the console was one of my favorite purchases to date.

I wasn't aware that the silver rings around the WRX knobs were darker than the STI rings. I like the darker look better so I guess I lucked out there.

Specifically the STI Limited has the lighter silver dials (with amber indicators). The 2005-07 WRX and STI dials are the same darker gray color.

V cool cool, I like that info. Thanks

Jarharms, for what it's worth, when i ordered my black HVAC buttons from flatironstuning they told me that the Subaru part numbers were identical to the S204 knobs aside from the temp knob. They weren't sure of the part number for the S204 temp knob but at least that helps confirm that the part numbers for the other 2 are the same for the STI Limited and S204.

UPDATE: The parts came in from japanparts.com last night and they are identical to the stock pieces found in my WRX, aside from being flat black instead of silver. The install was a breeze. The shift boot mounted right up with no issues. No need for the STI shifter trim if you don't want it.

I followed this write-up to switch out the cigarette lighter and HVAC knobs :
http://www.iwsti.com/forums/how-inst...t-install.html

NOTE:
- Plyers were not necessary to remove the cigarette lighter. I used my hand to simply loosen the back piece and slid the cigarette lighter out.
- As mentioned in step 20 of the above install guide, to get the HVAC knobs out you just have to pull up on them. Don't be afraid. It feels like you might break them but like the thread says, they just pop right off with a little bit of force. They pop right in just as easily.

Final note, which I believe is probably most important for potential buyers of this product...

The texture of these S204 pieces is very soft, almost suede like. It feels cool but unfortunately, these pieces DO scratch easier that the stock silver pieces. I barely grazed the corner of the door of the cigarette lighter with the tip of the phillips head screw driver by accident and it left a permanent scratch. Luckily it's on the outside edge of the door and not noticeable once installed. Had I known how fragile these pieces were I probably would have thought twice before purchasing them. I'll be curious to see how the shifter trim looks after a year with my dog in the car...

I tried to take a picture of the finished product but it turned out blurry as hell. For reference, it looks identical to the second picture in the OP, minus the STI shifter trim and with a black head unit.

From what I've read they're similar.

Default S204 Dash Kit on '07 WRX. Question...

The dial faces are the same color between JDM S204 and USDM STI Ltd. The only difference being degC for S204 and degF for STI Ltd.
The dial rings are also the same silver color but the indicator is red on the S204 and amber on the STI Ltd. Honestly I think the red vs amber is negligible unless your retrofitting LEDs.
