Default Exhaust: Convince me.

I'm going to turbo my 1999 RS within the next couple months. I already have a 2.25" Stromung dual-tip cat-back exhaust. I bought it for N/A setup. Should I get a 3" cat-back to replace the Stromung when I put the turbo on? What advantages would it give me? Or would I be OK just leaving it? Thanks.

Also what setup should I get?

I'll answer the stro-dung part 1st. I liked the sound but the welds were crap. Each one I have ever seen (about 8-10) have all rusted and left decent size exhaust holes/leaks.

for the rest i'd like to defer to my mommy...kastle.

ps. xcuse the sarcasm....i am pretty sure I am gonna get fired tomorrow...doah.

just go to your local muffler shop and have them custom make you a 3" pipe and put on some exhasut tips. itll be pretty loud without a muffler so just have them put on a resonator or two.

or you cna have them put on a muffler like a Magnaflow.

I'ld probably shell out for like a magnaflow can and then have a 3 in turbo back.

I've got a 2.5 exhaust (Prodrive WR Sport) right now that should be plenty for what I intend on running though.

Make that 9-11. My welds broke just the other day when the car was towed. The tips scraped on the driveway a very small bit, but it was enough to break em. The Cusco exhaust hangers didn't move enough.

To answer Silverscooby27's question, backpressure is a no-no on all exhausts. Even, N/A cars don't like backpressure. (They like the velocity from smaller exhausts.) So, go with larger if you can afford it.

I have a custom made 3" Stromung and have had no problems whatsoever with it... I suppose that has to do with the lack of weather other than extreme heat here in hell, err, I mean Phoenix....

I've just ordered a Brullen 3" stainless dual tip cat-back, so I guess the point now is moot, but will the 0.75 inch of diameter behind the downpipe really make that much of a difference? I'm going to have to run the Stromung for a while anyway until the Brullen gets "made", but I was just wondering. I understand that the backpressure will resist the turbo from turning as well, but that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge. Does anybody have an estimate of what kind of HP loss this would be?

Thx.

Since I installed the Brullen 3" there was a huge differance in spool up time. Boost starts at 2000 rpm 5psi at 2500 an on.
big differance on the pull at around the 4200-4700 range.
Don't know higher than that the clutch slips too much. Need to get the new clutch in soon.

david2z4 ... how is the sound? I'm interested in less back presure, but minimal sound increase.

You can have a combo of 6 loudness configurations

Loud muff no resonator
Loud muff w/ res
medium muff no res
medium w/ res
soft muff no res
soft muff w/ res

I got the med muff no res and due to the 3" piping it is just slightly louder than the Stromung.

If you want it no louder than the Stro get the soft muff no res
or the med muff w/ res.

The quietest one would be the soft muffler with resonator.

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

I'm looking forward to the new setup, although I don't recall getting an option as to the "loudness" of the setup. I hope it's no louder than what I've got now because it's already bordering on too loud.

Can't remember the price but I think it is in the upper $600's. I got it with a polished muffler can so it was $50 extra + rush shipping DHL which was a little over $200 more.

I would call and comfirm what configuration you got. The Loud w/out res is quite loud!

Contact Larry Ganz or Jack (GTBGUY). Jack handles all the US Distributors I think.

One more thing, Don't expect a lightweight settup, this thing could work on a semi truck, it is a beefy just under 40 lbs.
