Post Considering getting rid of the RS...Need advise.

So here's the situation...I drive a 2000 2-door RS and my wife dives a 1995 2-door L. We need at least 1 larger car. I have 3 options:
Option #1: Trade in RS for the car she wants (Legacy GT or an Impreza Sport Wagon) and I keep her '95 L and slowly build it into a WRX (many of my mods will transfer to the '95).

Option #2: Trade in her '95 for something new but "inexpensive", like a Suzuki Esteem Wagon, Hyundai Elantra, etc. I keep the RS.

Option #3: Ignore her need for a larger car, she keeps the L and I keep the RS.

Now mind you, I'd like a safe car to tranport my family (wife & daugther) and the Impreza has a better crash rating than most of the "inexpensive" cars I've seen. The main issue is comfort, her Impreza runs great and is very reliable, but would be better for us if it had 4 doors instead of 2. Oh, and I'm not made of money, so buying anything that costs more than 12K and keeping the RS is not an option.

What to do, what to do. The local Subaru dealer has a 2000 Impreza 4 door still in stock that they need to sell before Dec 31st, they already marked it down from 17K to 15K, do you think that they would sell it for less? Like 12K?

Responsibility sucks...I want to be a kid again!

Get rid of whatever you have to and get a WRX wagon!

I think so. Remember, the L isn't the most popular model so they'll probably deal with price. I know there's a blue L sedan in Orlando that's been on the lot forever. Even here in Delray, there's been 3 L models for at least 4 months (1 sedan, 2 wagons) that just sit around. Becky and I are looking too, even though we don't get rid of the Camry for another 8 months. I loved my L, but a wagon would be great.

So I should try and wheel & deal on the 4 door?....What if that doesn't work?...

I LOOOVE my Legacy GT wagon! Nothing adult about it from the driver's seat, and you mod it just like an RS... Only thing is, they're a little hard to find on the used market...

Thumbs up

I kind of echo NickCat's sentiments. Wait for the WRX wagon to come down. It is only 3 more months or so correct? And sell your RS, your mods, and part of your soul and keep the L. Then you can have a great family car, a car you can build up to rally in, and a grin that cannot be erased

I like how NickCat and NickSTi think. Wait 3 months for the WRX wagon to come to our shores, then get one. Keeping the RS or the L is another story. If it was me and I were a rich man I would keep the RS, but the L would still be a great platform to start from and the L is probably a lot closer to being paid off.

But you know, if you really want something really sporty. Get a Lambo Diablo, not much room, but there is a space just above the engine cowl to strap a baby seat. The baby not only has a great view, but also a sporty ride.

Look into the wagon and swap the engine and tranny out of the RS and into the L!! I'm not kidding, look into that. Or just wait 3 months for the WRX. But, remember if you wait the 3 months, thats 3 more car payments that you have to make. Or just keep the RS and sell the L. I think that many people will buy the RS, just because of its looks.

Revised option list

1) WRX Wagon "family car" (manual tranny), used 4-door L wagon (auto tranny) as the second car. AGX's and some good wheels on the L, of course.

2) Late 80's/Early 90's: Passat? Fox Wagon? Quantum or Vanagon Syncro (maintain the AWD family!!)? They're all available in great shape for under 5k, and they're all fun cars. Well, except for the Fox, I suppose. I know a guy that can make the 16v Passat dust your RS... Hey, if you need a people-mover, look no further than good 'ol VW.

3) I just saw an Audi RS-4 on Dale Mabry the other day... >)

4) I hear Daewoo or Toyota will give you a good deal on your RS. (sorry Kyle, couldn't resist!)

Opie,
I feel your pain. Decisions like this are just never easy. My thought is you've waited this long and Lil'Alien has been around for awhile now. Hold out for the WRX wagon or you could just look at a Outback Sport or L wagon and you know we'll help you trick it out.

My wife has a lovely Astro Van that she just had to have... Now she is like, Gee I wish I had something a little smaller... She likes her van but when the urge hits to have something different I gotta try and make her wait a while and see if it is a need or just a want.

Let us know,

Later

Thanks for everyone's replies...we are actually trying to negotiate the purchase of the 2000 Impreza L Sedan that Mastro still has in their inventory. It's number crunching time...they had marked it down to 15K. But in order to get the payment I desire we need to lose another 4K in price or gain another 4K in trade. We'll see what happens, it is the end of the year, the car has been on the lot for at least 4 months and the body style is getting phased out...so hopefully things will work out. They also have quite a few used Subaru's in stock, Legacy's and Forester's...who knows.

Wish me luck,

Maybe a used Forester? That was my second choice if I couldn't find my RS. Do they have anything good?

Leo - Ya know I kick myself every day for not getting the 4-door, especially since they had a Sedona Red one on the lot when I bought the 2-door! But me and my hard head wanted a silver car...because they are so rare Live and learn I guess.

Matt - They have 5 used Legacy's '97-'99 and one Forester, I think it's a '99. I didn't look real closely at them (condition, mileage, etc) but we'll see what happens.

They may not be a bad idea. They're all great cars. Our Legacy had 200k on the odometer when my sister totalled it last month.
