Default Boostmonkey vs. MBC: Nothing but the Truth!

Hi WRXXXers,

I have tried to get a concentrated picture from the forum about the Boostmonkey (Boost Monkey), but there is really no such thing.

OK, guys, the ones WHO HAVE ONE, please respond to this thread and let us know if this is really the "yellow of the egg" since it makes perfect sense how they prove NOT TO USE a MBC.

Real life questions:

1.) What are the disadvantages to use the Boostmonkey?

2.) Are dealers giving you a fit on warranty when they see it?

3.) Can you remove it easily before going to the dealer? (if so, how to install best?)

4.) Is your Rex's performance constant and where it should be?

5.) What boost pressures are you running day in and day out?

6.) Are you CONVINCED that the Boost Monkey is the right thing and the MBC is NOT THE WAY to go?

7.) What blew up so far on your Rex relating to higher boost?

Let's make this a valuable technical feddback thead with FACTS. It sure will help many fellows now and in the future.

Thanks,

Blitzer

1.) What are the disadvantages to use the Boostmonkey?

cutting wires at ecu/silanoid(dam i can't spell today)..i have a turboxs pass through harness.. so i havn't cut my harness

2.) Are dealers giving you a fit on warranty when they see it?

perhaps they have course to, read the magnusson-moss act though

3.) Can you remove it easily before going to the dealer? (if so, how to install best?)

due to having connections at the silnoid and at the ecu there is two place to unhook it

4.) Is your Rex's performance constant and where it should be?

yes ..

5.) What boost pressures are you running day in and day out?

.95 bar

6.) Are you CONVINCED that the Boost Monkey is the right thing and the MBC is NOT THE WAY to go?

i like the cabin adjustability.. still havn't figured out where to mount it yet

7.) What blew up so far on your Rex relating to higher boost?

nothing? .. not higher constant...

I don't like cutting or splicing of wires into my ECU. You have to cut and splice 1 wire to the boost solenoid. Yes it's very easy, but on a car with a 3 year warranty, I would rather not cut wires, but I weighed the decision and decided to anyway.

2.) Are dealers giving you a fit on warranty when they see it?
Have not (knocking on wood) had the need to get warranty servicve since installing.

3.) Can you remove it easily before going to the dealer? (if so, how to install best?)
I don't know how this would be possible - it depends on how stupid the tech is, I guess. It also depends on what you're taking the car to the dealer for. If you are getting an alignment, or an oil change, nobody is ever going to notice. If you're having electrical problems, only a blind tech on crack is not going to notice wire taps hanging off the ECU and a big cut in the boost solenoid wires -- I don't care if you do a real "stealth" install, if they need to look for things, somebody will eventually run across it. It depends on how badly the dealer wants to be a prick about it.

4.) Is your Rex's performance constant and where it should be?
No, but it never was. Living on eastern PA, I saw temps last week in the low 70's with humidity in the 50's. Yesterday, it was 90+ with humidity in the 99's+ -- so last week, I was getting a nice 14.5-15.0psi consistently (with the monkey) but today and yesterday I get 13.5-14psi if I'm lucky. That's not the monkey's fault, just a "fault" with turbo cars and lousy weather

5.) What boost pressures are you running day in and day out?
I don't have an EGT gauge or any other mods, and I'm a wuss, so I have mine set to engage at 90%+ throttle. The highest I've seen (without restrictor mod) has been 15.3psi and that was on a perfect night - cool + dry, and the car pulled HARD!!!! On partial throttle, I typically see between 5-7psi depending on engine speed/climate.

6.) Are you CONVINCED that the Boost Monkey is the right thing and the MBC is NOT THE WAY to go?
I did the research and the only thing I'm convinced about is that there is nobody that can prove (to me) one way or the other a solid conclusion. Person A would have you believe your engine is going to go into critical meltdown at the hint of 1600F -- Person B goes into a dissertation of how 1600F is no big deal for a short time, proper conditions, etc... Person C says 1600F is barely warm. You make the call. How will this effect engine longevity. *shrug* Dunno. Haven't had them long enough to find out. Somebody says for $15 you can build your own 2 part MBC that will take care of partial throttle EGTs - I dunno. I thought $120.00 was a fair price since I hated the "randomness" of boost prior to the monkey, thought it was an easy install, clean and simple, and had 2 blinky lights. Blinky lights are always good. Never had an MBC, but I did consider it. Don't have an EGT gauge and I would NEVER use an MBC without one, and I'm a little nervous without one now, but still monkeying anyway. Just my personal feelings.

7.) What blew up so far on your Rex relating to higher boost?
(more knocking on wood) nothing so far, but I think Anna Kournikova is hot. (sorry - since i had nothing valuable to add, I figured I'd add something completely unrelated)

Let's make this a valuable technical feddback thead with FACTS. It sure will help many fellows now and in the future.
I think Dick Cheney is actually a robot. I don't know that for sure, but that's what I heard. I'm also the princess of Canada, but I can't back that up with paper work.

Don't believe anything he says - I'm the princess of Canada and I do have the paperwork to back it up. I also work part-time as the Prime Minister to make ends meet and fund my WRX obsession.

Has anybody tried the boostmonkey with the Vishnu's Stage 0? pros vs cons. I ordered both and I'm a little concerned about the performance.

Appreciate your replys
