Default Buzzing sound & no crank/ignition... $50 tow later, starts fine?

Strange thing happened a couple of days ago: came back from lunch to the parking lot and tried starting the car... nothing. Only a constant buzzing sound when the key is in the ACCESSORIES-ON-START positions. No crank, no other sounds whatsoever.

It seems like the battery is fine given that the windows go up and down and the headlights work. Also tried jump starting with with another car.

So I get the car towed to my local shop, unload it off the flatbed, and give it one more shot. Guess what? It starts up fine. We started it up a dozen times after that.

Still a bit concerned since I don't know what was the problem before. Car has been running fine as usual since. Any ideas?

My Legacy does that. Replacing the battery cables helped a lot, as they had corrosion inside the cable (couldn't see it without cutting the cable apart). Worked well for a few months, then had to replace the battery anyway....always had 12.5V but cranking amperage was way low, which a voltmeter won't tell you.

Could be that the starter is going bad. They don't always completely fail. Hit the solenoid with a rubber mallet and try to start again. Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions guy; cables seems fine and I'll have to look into the starter more.

The problem surfaced again twice in the past week and a half. I was able to start it again after a few minutes however -- very strange.

Does the shifter have anything to do with the starting? Both times it started after I popped off the shift interlock tab to put it in neutral (I wanted to push it out of a parking spot). I'm not sure if this has anything at all to do with starting the car.

Next time it happens put it in neutral and try to start it. If so...neutral safety switch is gone.

If it's not that, then have the starter checked. You should be able to pull it out very easily since you don't have a TMIC.

Past that...ignition switch, or you've got a hot wire grounding itself out somewhere.

You might have a flat spot on the starter. We have a mower with that issue. Just some time a tap on it or just trying to turn it over a few times get it going.

So it seems like the neutral safety switch is the likely culprit -- last night when the car did not start, it started in neutral.

Any one have experience fixing this yourself? It seems like a small part and shouldn't cost too much...

Look in the manual for inhibit switch and how to test it in the AT section.

I have been experiencing this intermittently for the last couple of months. At first I thought I was being lazy and not pushing the clutch in completely to start it in the morning...but it is not that. Not looking forward to getting stranded one day...this appears to be an elusive beast!

I think the OP had an Automatic Transmission...

In your case, it could be the switch on the clutch pedal itself, that won't allow the starter to turn unless the clutch pedal is depressed.

Just a shot in the dark (besides the other suggestions) but you may want to check that out.

Thanks for the insight! Will check it out or have someone more qualified than me do the same.

np, you can put a jumper wire on that switch to bypass it.
