Default CEL code PO442 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected

Had this code for a while now. Doesn't seem to effect the performance of the car, but a CEL is just annoying.
Hooked the car up to a smoke machine the other day and still couldn't find a leak. Anyone have a suggestion on some good spots, specifically, to look with a smoke machine?
Or anyone have some alternatives to try and fix this annoying problem?

my brother and I have both had this code on our cars before. Have you tried making sure your gas cap is on straight and tight? This was the fix for both of us...simply unscrew the gas cap, put it back on then reset the ecu and the CEL shouldn't come back.

I've had this code for awhile. Last week I finally got around to replacing the gas cap. It seemed to be the answer. No more idling issues or hesitation in the throttle either. But into my 2nd tank when it dropped below a 1/4 tank today it came back. Wth!
I guess the next thing to check is the tank seal... but I have no odor in the car. Maybe I will have time after the weekend.

Check the top of your fuel pump/sending unit for cracks. Also inspect the gas cap gasket for tears.

Thanks I will. But I would like to correct my previous post. The po457 was coming up until I replaced the gas cap. Now its the po442 that I'm getting.

So today the cel came on again with the blinking cruise control light. I checked it with my AP and sure enough it was the PO442 again. I was so fed up with the cel coming on , so I gutted her and when I removed the cabin cover for the fuel pump access plate there was a strong gas smell. So I picked up a gasket and changed it out. Sure enough the old one had 3 rips in it just past where the bolts go through. No cel so far. I'm hoping $5 was all I needed to spend to fix it.

Considering the fact you helped with my fp install i'm gonna say I have the same issue and need the same fix...

If anyone has had the recall done for the one way valve in the tank and poss ECM reflash, you might just want to check the gasket at the fuel pump, they don't always go back the way they should.

Default CEL code PO442 and recall

My CEL repeatedly returns 442 also. I had the recall work done before the recall was issued. I couldn't stand the fumes in the "cabin."
In haste, the Car Store of Norwich, VT failed to properly reconnect the coolant hose. It popped a few days later at 7 AM (Saturday) before a road trip. They were cool enough to fix it at 7:30 AM. On the return (Sunday) the car began to idle strangely.
Fortunately, they were open and, though they first had me sign a waiver to charge me $50 if it wasn't their fault, they fixed it and conceded it was their fault. It turned out wire to one of the cylinders popped. I imagine I could have resolved it myself.
I thought about the gas cap gasket. It does seem to be wet along part of its circumference. I would imagine that's where there's a gap. Maybe it's not the gasket as much as the rim of the fuel opening...

In light of the first two "glitches," I also wonder if the fuel pump gasket wasn't put back properly.
I'll check that too.

I have had this code come on once a month for a long time. I just keep a scanner in my car to clear the code because the car runs great and I've already put so much money into it. As long as it's always the same code I don't even worry about it. My car is getting old so I just expect this.

I keep a scanner in my car too, but my CEL comes on frequently. Mine is old too, but in solid shape. I wonder if I want to do one more round of repairs. It has door gouge, a problematic after-market axle I neglected to replace on warranty (should have rebuilt the. original), and the CEL issue. It also seemed to have a "whir" (a bit like engine braking or going in reverse) after the 90K service. Maybe it's finally as tight as it should have been, but I have no equivalent to compare it to. My immediate area is not known for its great mechanics or dealers.

More than likely your fuel filler neck is rotted and rusted. I would check that.
