Default 2002 WRX Power Steering Pump Rebuild Kit 34490FE000

The pump in my early 2002 WRX is going bad. I have read through the tons and tons of pages in the threads by Hwy61, 68Cadillac, and Maxell. These people have all in one shape or another measured the O-Rings that needed replacing and bought new ones. I plan to inspect both of the soft hoses and put new clamps on them this weekend, as well as pull out my pump and put new O-Ring seals in.

My car being produced before March of 2001 has a re-build kit for it, Subaru P/N 34490FE000. I ordered a few of them and decided to measure the O-Rings in there to see how they compared to post-2002 WRX power steering pumps. I have included some info below.

The 03/01 and earlier pump exploded view courtesy of Opposed Forces, the O-Ring kit is item #9 (34490FE000)

I then took a photo of the kit that arrived.

Then I measured each one and compared to the closest standard size O-Rings and made this chart.

Maybe some of these O-Rings are shared in later pumps, I don't know. When I pull apart my pump this weekend I'll share any other information in regards to this kit. The O-Ring labeled #12 (20.1mm OD, 15.3mm ID) is the one that most people swap out first with some success. Sadly the pump on the early 2002's makes it so you can't get to that O-Ring w/o pulling the whole pump out.

As a follow up to this post, the power steering pump kit worked great to rebuild my pump this weekend. Was able to replace four of the O-Rings, but ended up not taking the pulley and shaft out, so did not use the Wire Clip, Bushing, nor two of the other O-Rings. I think that solved my problem, but we'll see.

Stripped threads on the aluminum block putting the pump back in. I would suggest replacing the bolts with ones 5-10mm longer when you put the pump back on. Plenty of room for 10mm longer bolts.

Actually I re-built the pump with this kit and thought I solved the leak but a few weeks later fluid was all over the top of the pump again. Then I took the car into a shop for something un-related (power steering rack boot replacement), and the guy fixed the problem for under $1, without me even asking him to. He said he saw the leak and put in two new copper washers on both sides of the banjo bolt. I laughed to myself that there was no way that solved the problem, but sure enough 6 months later my pump is still dry and my reservoir has not needed topping off. Something to consider trying. I'm not even sure what size washers, but I think they have some crush-ability to them.

Right on. I am not 100% as to what my exact problem might be, but i know it is the power steering pump squealing at low rpms/ wide turns. I would prefer to rebuild my current pump, but Thanks for that tip!

There are tons of threads on the PS pump problems, if you have noise but no leak check for bubbles in your reservoir, it could be as simple as putting new hose clamps on the return line. I actually also bought a new return line since it was pretty cracked. Here are a few part numbers I gathered (and their price at the time at subaruparts.com) when I was debugging my problem:

PS Pump Repair Kit 34490FE000 $14.35
Suction Hose 34611FE000 $33.49
Return Hose 34611FE050 $23.93

Let me know if the kit comes with the bearing & rotary seal that was mentioned on the DIY ps rebuild thread. I am assuming those items should come with this kit if they are applicable to the 2002 ps pump.

How can one tell if this kit applies to the current pump? I purchased an 02 pump and want to rebuild it before slapping it back on. Thanks.

If the WRX you got the pump from has a build date of March 2001 or earlier then this kit applies. If it wasn't advertised a "3/01 PS Pump" it probably is older than that is the 2002-2003 pump.

This kit looks like the Gates kit.. Gates works on 2002-2003. I'll bet this Subaru kit will work on an 03 also.. My 03 p/s pump looks the same as the one on the exploded view above...

Seems like there is not a kit, but the following thread has the information you need... Post 9 for parts list.
- I know you can get the o-rings in Buna-N material at Napa
- I think you can get the oil seal from CarQuest
- I think you'll have to get the bearing from the internet (McMaster) but maybe the CarQuest or Napa guys can get what you need too.

I really want to try replacing those two copper crush washers on the banjo bolt before I buy a whole new pump. Does anyone know the Subaru P/N for those copper crush washers? I have whining on cold starts and some shuddering at low rpms when turning tightly at very low speed (turning into garage). Other than those symptoms, my power steering works fine 98% of the time.

Not sure if this is correct, but according to the opposed forces blowup at http://opposedforces.com/parts/impre...llustration_2/, it looks like you want part #12 which is 34621AC021 for a pre-April of 02 WRX like mine or 34621AC022 for after April 02.

I just wanted to add that I have an 02 WRX with a 10/01 build date. It has the same power steering as the one in the original post. Not one of the newer ones with the hose on the top.

Also...the whine noise I was getting was from the a/c idler pulley. It was very similar to a power steering whine.
