Question Trouble turning ignition key

My wife is having trouble turning the ignition key in her 95 Legacy LS to start the car. She has to wriggle the steering wheel before the lock on the ignition switch lets go. It has gotten progressively harder to turn the key. It does not only happen when the steering wheel is locked. She's always managed to get it started but it is becoming a pain. Any ideas or suggestions?

that's the way most cars are, unfortunately. It's a bit harder to do if the steering wheel is locked.

Does she turn the wheel to one side before turning the car off? When the wheels are far to one side and the pressure in the PS drops the wheel turns towards straight with some force. Sounds like it might put all this pressure against the stearing lock.

No, no, I know all about the steering wheel lock mechanism. It happens when the car is parked with the wheels completely straight and when the steering wheel is NOT locked. I'm assuming that there is something wrong with the locking mechanism in the ignition switch but just thought someone might have some insight before we put ourselves at the mercy of a mechanic.

It can also be caused by a worn key. Do you have a spare that isn't used every day? If so try it.

I had a hell of a time removing my key from steering column. Turned out the key was way worn, so I'm now using one of the two spare keys

Wish it was just the key but it isn't. Does it with my key as well as hers and mine has only been used a few times. We'll probably just take it in and see what the mechanic says. Thanks for all your suggestions. That's why I love the I-Club.
