Post High RPM's

Is bouncing off the rev limiter "bad" for the car...say while autox'ing or running hard every now and then. Also I keep reading that redline is 6250, but it seems like on my 98 RS it cuts out at 6500. Can the valvetrain handle this stress or should I play more gently...

Thanks

PS: I know there is not much power above 6k.

As for the rev limiter...it shouldn't be too bad if you bounce off it every so often, just don't hold it there for an extended period of time.

Edit a moronic statement.

Don't chalk it up to the innaccurate tach, chalk it up to the fact that your '98 has a DOHC 2.5L with a higher rev limiter than the later SOHC engine. I've heard the DOHC rev limiter is anywhere from 6500rpm to 6750rpm, so I'm not sure what is the truth. I've seen over 6500rpm - up to maybe 6650rpm - without hitting the rev limiter.

I have a autometer memory tach in my sohc rs so it saves the highest point which is 5,400 but remember this is ran off of the stock computer wire so the only way to get a accurate reading is to run on of the coil wire.....

Not that I ever take my car to redline , but if I did, I would be able to tell you that my '02RS tach regularly passed 6250 rpm during spirited driving. I would tell you (if I ever actually revved the engine high enough) that it had made it to 6400 or so on the tach before I shifted. I would attribute this to accuracy errors in the tach reading. Later.

I think COBB tested the stock engine and said it can safely rev to about 7 grand. You should be fine bouncing it off the rev limited after all its there so you donít blow your engine up.

Kostamojen: 6000rpm redline? So the 1.8 liter is not only weak but it cannot rev as high either?

My 02's redline is marked 6250, I'll go all the way up to about 6400 if I want to move, and twice I've hit the limiter at 6500 RPM's. hope that can help a little.

I would assume that SOA would design the rev limiter to cut in before anything "bad" happens. Think of it as a saftey device...this is as high as you can go before you f something up. It would make sense to have the rev limiter cut in BEFORE and not after you do real "beyond the capabilites of the motor" damage to the car.

I could be totally wrong though...so don't take my word on it!

Naw, I just want a 7000 redline and some stiffer valve springs with cams that put the power up 1000rpms ala cobb's cams... Screw it if the engine blows, ill just get an EJ25 then I just want something unique!
