Default Aspiring to break into the tens with a stock 5 speed...

Recently I had i chance to get a couple of test runs in at Import Face off in Houston. My first pass i went 12.1@124.9mph, my second I went 11.4@115(missed fourth).

The car is a 2003 WRX, 2.5 long block, Blouch Dom4.0xt. Car made 444whp 401tq @ 21psi on a 1100 series mustang dyno. The transmission has LGT gears 1-4, which ive had amazing luck with. The gears have over 30k miles on them, at least 20 launches at a prepped track and countless on the street.

I decided to do some upgrades to the engine after houston as it currently has Manley h beam rods which are limited to around 450whp. Upgrading with sleeves and pauter rods to allow for more boost. Planning on making near 500whp.

So to get to why I started this thread, i've lurked around to find the fastest documented stock 5speed 1/4 time with not too much luck. Plenty of low 11 second passes but none in the tens. I'm sure its been done before, but maybe my searching skills are not up to par. So I'm looking for information on anyone whos been in the tens with a stock 5speed. Thanks!

You don't have a stock 5mt so I don't understand your point. You might be able to make a couple of passes but it will grenade eventually. A 5mt with LGT gears will eventually fail launching with that much power.

As I read this you're not a transmission builder, correct? So here is the glory of running 10s on a LGT gear set?

^this. Everything everywhere says the 5MT will not handle that kind of abuse. Maybe with the ppg gear set, but not stock. Do some googling and reading.

It's stock as in its a Subaru gear set. I do rebuild my transmissions my self, so it's very cheap to fix, I do this for a living. I also have access to wholes sale pricing on parts. I've had very good luck with these gears. However I defiantly expect them to break at some point. I expected to catch allot of flack for this thread and I'm
Not here to argue the strength of the 5 speed, I know it's weak. But that's actually why I want to run tens in it before I up grade to ppg's.

Very interested in how it goes, and wishing you good luck! Hope you hit the 10s! I have a 5 speed from a 2008 WRX in a mid engined car with a 3.0 Turbo Tribeca engine. So far it has no gearbox problems, but drivers are asked not to launch the car or even give full throttle in 1st gear. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2494976
By LGT, I understand that you mean Legacy GT. Are these different from the gears in the 2008 WRX box?

No

Although, an actual LGT box has 4.11 fd instead of a 2008+ WRX's 3.9

The one gear that everyone seems to forget to consider is the final gear, aka your tire circumference. Try going for smaller tires to move the shift points lower and reduce shock to the drivetrain.

I'm not worried about breaking. Even in worst case scenario of braking like first or the input, it wont be terribly expensive for me to fix. The information im looking for is basically what the stock 5 speed record in the 1/4 mile is. Almost done with my new motor, just have to find time to work on my own car. Either way, the goal for this summer is to brake into the tens.

The limitation will be in the strength of the case, given you gave a built gear-set. All of the high HP tracked Subarus I've seen end up with a 6spd because the case has significantly more beef.

Well I don't know him personally, but I know of the car. He works for a tuning shop in TX, so I'm guessing he did all the work himself. I don't think he has anything special in the transmission, maybe he will chime in and set the record straight.

Why?

Isnt this thread about the durability of the 5spd to 10s. I wish the OP would come back and give us some kind of tally of launches. Then before the tranny breaks take it out and inspect it to see why it has not broken when I have broken second gear twice on a hybrid NA 2.5 engine without launching or racing.
