Default Anyone have a CRAP CHEAP laptop.

Or know someplace where I can get some NEW batteries for a Gateway Laptop PII-266 from about 1997?!?

It works just fine except neither battery will work even though they report being 100% and 19%. Neither one of them will power up the laptop at all.

If you haven't already, I would check on Ebay. I have an HP and there is a good supply of batteries for those on there.

Does anyone have a laptop they want to sell cheap? Or maybe trade up for mine. I just need a laptop that has a good battery life, at least Win95 and that's about it for Link tuning.

Thanks

Seriously, just buy one off ebay. You can get something like that for under $200 easy.

david, what model is the laptop? I ordered a few extra batteries for travelling with my old Solo2500 (1998 vintage). I'll get the part number and/or a pic of the battery when I get a chance.

For that matter, I got my batteries from Ebay a couple of years ago. I'm sure they're no less popular now...

It's a gateway solo 9100 series... The only problem is when I power on the unit with AC power I can see that one battery is 100% charged and another one is 20% charged and it STILL won't power on even with BOTH batteries in there.

I don't know will have to see ...

I have a Solo 9100XL too and I resent you calling it cheap crap. That POS cost me 5G when new....

Try http://www.skyline-eng.com They can repair these laptops and have parts they can sell you including batteries. I have come to the realization though that I am not going to spend any more money on mine. Once the screen backlight goes out (which should be soon) laptop goes bye-bye.

If it reads a charge from the battery it's probably not the battery that's bad. You could check that with a simple voltmeter. It sounds like a problem with the motherboard in the laptop. Good luck, but I think buying a battery was not a sound decision.

Thats why I asked the gateway store if it was ok if I could return the battery if that wasn't the problem and they said sure . So we will see I guess.

Hey Drac-

I just did a voltage test on both batteries and they both came up with about 10.2 - 10.5V. On the battery it says they are rated for 14.4V and 3900mAmp which seems a bit on the powerful side to me... but then again it is an old laptop and I also don't have a very wide exposure to laptop batteries.

But those voltages seem significantly lower than what it's rated at so I am leaning towards that... at the moment .

what was the voltage of the one reading 20% charge and what was the voltage of the one reading 100% charge?

They are so close it seems to me that the one reading 100% should be at the 14.4V - makes me worry about the laptop - I had that problem with my old IBM laptop, didn't matter what battery I used, it didn't work off battery.

They were both fairly close to each other in the readings so? I KNOW that the laptop USED to work off of either battery then I let everything sit for almost two years... and I think that is pretty bad for batteries [oops]. Will see though.

so ummmm dumb question, why not pay 30$ for a power inverter instead of the battery tard boy?.... That way battery life is never a concern, at the very least you'd basically get a UPS from the battery, or throw em out and save the weight....

-Z

edit:

in fact I could have given you one, had to turn it over to the DIA Security for my flight back, they said it looked suspicious, and they had no way to check out whether it worked. So i could either check it in, have it shipped via fed ex, or just relinguish it... i chose to just give it away to them, as the other options took too much time and I was late for the flight as it was

So the laptop works ok when plugged into the wall? Did you try cleaning the contacts on the battery posts and internally within the laptop. An ordinary pencil eraser works great, or some fine grit sandpaper like 800 or above. Try that battery though and let me know. It could be just a bad solder joint at the battery connection post inside the laptop.

ZMW - WOW you are SO SO SO SMART!!! Oh wait a minute... enter scenerio screen right: what happens when your laptop is hooked up to your cigarette lighter and the car dies... becuase guess what your idle if off or vacuum overrun is off or.... maybe you start getting the idea there.... .

Oh and it's DRAIN ON SOCIETY boy to you [heh]. Yah that would work pretty good right up to the point when your car either dies or doesn't start and you need your laptop to figure out why .

The terminals are all VERY narrow slots and not exposed in the least. Besides when I stuck some wire in there to get a reading for the voltage it was putting out it seemed to have no problem transfering power to my multimeter... but thanks for the ideas.

MAN it REALLY sucks having the Link here and NOT BEING ABLE to Play with it!!!!

Ok I am better now [heh].
