Default Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR)

Has anyone been to this event in Wellsboro, Pa, that could give me some advice? I haven't been to this event before (or any rally for that matter) and I want to make the best of it while I am there. I am curious to know if there is a particular stage that is a must see or if there is a place to stand that is better than others? I understand that the night stage is a must see and I will try to make it to that one for sure.

I know standing around the corners is better than watching a straightaway and I want to be along the road and not in the grandstand. I wanna see the cars screaming past me if you know what I mean!

Are there any food vendors at the event? or should I plan to bring a cooler with food/water? We are planning to only be there on Saturday and don't plan to stay the night.

Any other advice or suggestions would be extremely helpful, thanks in advance.

spectating the stages takes some pre-planning. you can't just show up and watch, there are designated spectator areas where organizers have determined it's safe to watch (speccie areas are usually at 'gotcha' areas so there will be lots of action).

get to the speccie areas early, often the roads get closed off for competition an hour or so before the race cars come, and that can make access to some areas difficult.

go to event website stpr.org and they'll have maps of and directions to the speccie areas, plus a spectating schedule.

make sure to check out Parc Expose at the green in Wellsboro, where all the rally cars and crews meet the public. you can get autographs, collect rally schwag etc etc

be prepared to be outside all day, bring a backpack. raingear and good walking shoes. there are food vendors on the green in Wellsboro, but they don't offer much variety so you'll want to pack some sandwiches and snacks

be ready for dust, rain, bugs, etc...and getting pelted with gravel as the cars blast past!

That is exactly the info I was looking for, thank a lot. What about the prices to the events? I believe I read somewhere that it is $5 per car and $2 per person, is that a true statement? Thanks again.

How does the parking thing work? Do you have to park you vehicle along road and then walk to the stage or is there a parking area where everyone parks and walks from?

Well, did you have fun? Our weekend ended very early, crashing into the rocks in front of the VIP spectator area on stage 3.

One year I'm going to drive out there for this rally. But it wasn't this year.

I had a decent time. Seems like everything is a little unorganized. I suppose that might be from a lack of volunteers. I guess I was expecting a huge turn out, somewhat along the same lines as people flocking to sturgees. Boy, was I way off.

If there were THAT many people, I don't know how they'd control everyone.

LOL...BY A FEW ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE OFF....

The paradox of rally, in the US, is that spectators are counter productive to events.

For every 25 spectators you need ~1 volunteer marshall. 250 spectators 10 volunteers, 2500 spectators 100 volunteers, and so forth.... A volunteer costs an event ~$50 bucks in misc costs (shirt/food/hat/hand-outs/gas money....), more if hotel is provided.

Thus, 2500, non ticket buying spectators could cost an event $5,000 to marshall. Thats about 10% of the costs to run a National Rally America event, not to mention the increased insurance burden. That works out to 100 bux a team in entry fee....

Sure argue with my accounting, but the paradox is there. Spectators cost money and are a big financial cost to Rally in the US. Don't get me wrong spectators in rally are not going away, I think its just important to realize their real costs.

Why else would Rally Car move into the global/euro rally-x thing? 20 bux for admission and 5 bux for popcorn.... ummmm popcorn....

Here's a nice cell phone video of our mishap. And that doesn't even include the initial jump, that's the second bounce after landing...

Yup, adding more of the the super-special/euro rally-x cross element is the only way "rally" can charge for spectation. Albeit NEFR uses the both VIP Bus and Concord pond stage bus as a means as well.

i agree with you mate , i mean wrc events charge and i dont see why any of the RA events cant , to help assist in offsetting the fees to host the event.

and in comparison go check the fees wales rally gb charge !

At first I didn't like the idea of charging spectators, because I thought it would be more hassle than it's worth to police. But I started to think about it, and what if you just had a guy at set up at the foot of the access road where everyone parks, and charge $10 a car to park on the road? Might raise a few bucks to cover the cost of volunteers for that stage, AND might prompt more spectators to volunteer next year.
