Default Anyone regret not joining the military OR regret joining?

I'm interested to hear the other side as well...hence the thread title.

This is a spin off of my other thread...since I haven't used my weekly allotment of new threads up.

I truly regret not joining the Navy and doing nuclear sub duty at 18 when I had the chance and my ASVAB score of 98 (iirc) allowed me my choice of duties and tours.

I don't regret meeting my future wife, getting married, having kids, etc. and if I had to choose between them and a do-over I would still choose them.

I just think it would've been a great 4 years, possibly more, and I'd be able to tell my kids and grand kids I served my country.

Anyone else? Anyone served and wish they hadn't?

Maybe not the military...but something similar like police or fire...any of these jobs that allow you to work for 20 years and then retire pretty comfortably sound pretty good to me at 36 years old. I know a bunch of people I went to HS with that went this route and are looking at retiring in the next 3-4 years at 40 years old...can't beat that...

Many times I wish I joined the service instead of going right to college. I was not ready for college when I went, which is why I lasted only 2.5 years before dropping out. I feel that if i had joined the military, once I was done, I would have been more mentally ready for college, plus they're paying for the whole thing really would have helped, since most of the reason I left college was lack of funds.

Also, I REALLY would like to be a pilot. Only way to get a good commercial gig is to have flown in the military, apparently.

But whatever, I'm not upset about where I am in life now, but I think military service would have been good for me back in my late teens and early 20's.

Dont regret it at all. Even though I've only been in for 3 years, I've had the opportunity to do stuff couldn't do without being in without paying thousands of dollars.

Talk to any Nuke. They all definently regret joining.

I regret joining, that's for sure. I think most enlisted do. But maybe once I'm out I'll be glad I did.

It's all person to person. Depends highly on your job, branch, and where you're stationed.

My friend who was in Italy for 3 1/2 years definently doesn't regret it.

I joined the Navy in '04 and got out in '08. Joining was probably the best decision I ever made. I was failing college and just needed to get out on my own for awhile so I joined and the opportunities that opened up when I got out was great. It made me realize what the true meaning of freedom was which was all but taken by the military. I was sent to one of the worse commands in the Navy at the time which had a lot of restrictions due to murders in Japan. I'm talking about everyone being restricted to the base for 2-3 months, being told you have to be back on the ship by 2359, always had to have a liberty buddy if you decided to take a sip of booze, and getting ****ed because some idiot decided to paint the town red etc. I can vouch for everyone that it was probably the worse command they've ever been to. After I left I figured, if I could survive that command, I can survive anywhere. So here I am, steam rolling school, working a decent job, and pretty much living comfortably. The military changed my outlook on life and if it wasn't for the military, I'd be working some worthless job with no hopes of doing something great for myself. A lot of my friends who went to school eventually dropped out and friends who didn't go to school are working dead end jobs and friends who did graduate from school do not have the motivation to go do something for themselves. That could've been me if I did not join the military. That's my experience.

OP-I regret that I couldn't join. I have a steel rod in my leg from a motorcycle accident when I was 16, and that prevented me from going into the Coast Guard. I had called a recruiter and everything. I was bummed when he told me I couldn't go unless I got it taken out.

I still want to run the .50 on the deck of a CG boat

Yeah, with things going the way they are, I'll be lucky to be able to collect on the county's pension when I retire

I feel I should have - I went to college and wasn't ready for it. Way, way to immature.

I look back at guys I know that served, then went to college at age 22 or so - and man oh man did they have this isht together.

I could have used that kind of discipline at that age - would have taught me alot.

my gf's dad put himself thru flight school at the age of like 40, and flies aerial photography, and pipeline stuff now out in texas. He makes a lot less money than you do though.

Hell I retired from the Navy and sometimes what if my decision, so the grass isn't greener. But I also have 2-3 checks from the government coming in now on the 1st of every month, so I'm kinda happy about fact.

I’ve been in the Marines for 9 years now, and do I look back and say “what if?” Of course, but I absolutely do not regret joining. I was afforded the opportunity to serve my country and develop into an upstanding mature citizen of this country we live in. I think the military is the BEST starting point for those capable to serve. I have learned a valuable skill set that I can take into life after the military when I retire. And I’ll still be young as hell. And you can’t beat traveling around the world on Uncle Sam's dime. From the most beautiful Mediterranean beaches to the ****ty third world countries, it’s all an experience.

Christoff- My Uncle is a Nuke in the Navy and yes his job sucks, but I think thats why your field has accelerated promotions. I mean he is about to pin on Master Cheif at 12 years. Thats unheard of in any branch. And completely disagree with the statement about all Enlisted regretting that they joined. Just because you do, does not make that the overall opinion of servicemembers.

I was all set to go into the Air Force right out of high school. My girlfriend went a few months before me - the idea was to get through basic and then try to get stationed together. But a hot and awesome girl came along and gave me a taste. I didn't want to leave after that so I cancelled my military plans.

I think I would have been happier career-wise if I had gone. I wouldn't have ended up marrying the "hot and awesome girl" had I gone though.

USMC from 96 - 00, Military Police. I had a good time but it wasn't for me. I don't regret it at all. Made some really good life long friends that I visit when I travel for work now.

The military is a great option for people who are not ready for College. I think I lucked out with some great people that I served with.

There were even parts of Boot camp that were enjoyable.
