Default GURU's Is this safe at a track

So after an event here in Ontario this past weekend a fellow subie owner was SOL. It turns out it wasn't even his car.
Granted he was coming out of the corner a little hot but this entire thing could've been avoided if the hay wasn't there ...
If you pause it at the 24sec mark you can clearly see he wouldn't have hit the wall if the hay bail wasn't there...
IMHO i think this needs to be removed for future events...

ehhh it sucks dont get me wrong, looks like the hay was there for a reason, imo i dont think it needs to be there since the wall is right next to it. However they need to back those spectators up someone could have easy gotten hurt being that close. Also were those parade laps? The people in the teg had no helmets.

You're just sad because it was a Subaru instead of a Honda, aren't you?

He wasn't going to hit the wall if it wasn't there, but he was certainly close to it for no good reason. I'm surprised that he had little idea of where he was ending up. He wasn't even hot coming out of the corner. You can actually see the car squat on the exit as he stomped on the gas. He was apparently not looking ahead very well since he basically made his line the way it was only at the exit of the corner in very clear sight of the hay. Barreling towards it you see the car dive as he realized his mistake and got on the brakes. It did nothing for his line though. I'm sure he only thought he'd just send a bunch of hay everywhere instead of rolling his car onto its roof. It's a shame, but it's also user error which makes it hard for me to really have any pity on the guy.

If I were to make one gripe against the track, white plastic wrap on the bails next to a while concrete wall may not have been the brightest idea. I hear bright orange is really easy to see.

Yeah there is a lot more going on here than just the hay to be honest. I do think the hay should not be there... I also think the driver needs more instruction and the track should consider tighter safety measures.

Completely pointless for the hay to be there. One layer of hay won't do much anyway if you lose the brakes and come barreling in there. It's not the safest thing for that wall to be there in the first place but if that's the way the track is designed, it should just be left as is. Think of it like a street course and adjust your line/speed accordingly. It's also insane to have spectators standing that close to the track, someone could easily get hurt or killed.

I read it was a CSCS Time Trial event. Article is here:

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/07/e...-of-cameraman/

There are some lessons to be learned here that everyone can benefit from. Cant really blame the spectators because they obviously dont have any experience, so they dont know any better. But you would hope that the organization and track should know better than to allow a bunch of people who probably dont have any experience to practically camp out on that wall.

there shouldn't be anything in a corner that can fit under a tire and flip a car, common sense.

Some organization is getting its insurance pulled.

Hay bale is dumb; but, you shouldn't be hot footing it around a corner during parade laps.

Check out the TMP website, apparently this was some sort of general admission lapping session...hoo boy are the ruleZ loosey goosey, an impression which the video clearly reinforces.

esp scary how the cars behind the rolled Scoob stopped of their own accord and piled out to "help" without a single person looking behind to see if it was safe to do so

You forgot to mention the part where all the drivers hop out of their car (on a hot track) and run around to see what is going on?

What a clusterfart!

PS No reason for a haybail to be sitting at track-out in the road. Rigoddarndiculas!
