I'd say they are pretty quick. Better watch out!

Get 'em from a dead stop and hope they dont run around on drag radials and you'll be OK up to (depending on driver) 80-100mph.. then its bye bye time as you watch the SS's taillights get dimmer...that is stock SS vs lightly modded WRX...

They commonly agree that the 325hp rating is underated and they are more likely putting out about the same as the regular C5, around 350... dyno numbers have reinforced this as well, typically they will put down about 300 (or just shy) hp to the wheels..... With a good driver they will hit LOW 13's if not 13 flat... and trap around 105-109 mph+... STOCK.

Throw a cam and exhaust on and they will run 12s... throw a 150 shot on them (and a 9 bolt rearend) and they'll run 11s... and will hold together quite well....

Well, they are fast and run great traps stock, but I haven't lost to one since my last round of mods. We get them on the launch, but they almost catch up at the end, often trapping 5-8mph higher than me.

But the other day I got a little cocky. I had beaten a WS6 3 times in a row the previous week, so I challenged a different WS6 the next week. He was curious why I challenged him, but learned why when he only beat me by a tenth. The two cars were identical, so it really depends on the driver. In my experience, I haven't encountered many Camaro/Trans Am drivers who can launch and shift well enough to catch up after we jump them on the launch.

The Ls1 cars I have seen run 12.8 to 13.9. The variance is the driver and or light bolt on mods. Recently raced a Camaro SS from the middle of second gear to 140mph. I had around 15 cars on him at when I backed out. Afterword we talked. He had an exhaust, Pulleys and a chip. He said he runs 12.9's to 13.0's at 110-115mph at the strip. I would call his car "typical".

I'll let Kevin (fastest automatic Subaru in the USA) defend himself.

But... goober this:

This was me vs. an LS1 Vette . Watch the video and you'll see it's not staged. Oh, and BTW, this LS1 (a friend of mine) has Z06 mods (headers and so on). I've since beaten him twice but now each time we race, it's really close. He says the only way he can win is with blinders on so that he won't be distracted by the 3-5 car launch I get on him.

My friend in Sacto has an SS. It's pretty fast we both run mid to low 13's but when we race he does much worse, very distracting to have the car your racing pull 4 or 5 car lengths on you while your tires are spinning

That's some funny stuff Padre! And I LOVE that video. We need more of them.

About the staged launches....well....I won't comment. I'll post a video when I get home (street not track...and it's another Camaro). That video I was beaten by a half car length though. What you can not see in the video is the fact that I had low bottle pressure from racing most of that night, no bottle warmer and no intercooler during that run.

The 2nd street video is very poor quality but I did have an intercooler and bottle warmer. It was against an old school 'hopped' up Camaro. Stay tuned!

And oh yeah, I wouldn't touch a Camaro SS from a roll, especially if it's been modded and/or with nitrous. They are wicked! You have been warned *Tail between legs*.

From a roll, a low-13 sec WRX will get killed by a low-13 sec SS... they are traction limited, we are not. Just look at the traps!!

Heres a link to a really cool quarter mile registry that some local friends are part of:

LINK

Now compare these times to equal times on the Subaru 1/4 Mile Registry... look at the trap speeds...

Generally speaking, the F-bodies will have higher traps... and as we know, better top end.

Oh I agree. On one of my races with the LS1 Vette, I took along a passenger. He gave me a running commentary: "Wow! [on the launch]... you got 'em!... ummm... here he comes... here he comes... HE'S COMING!... there he goes..."

I'm going back to the track on Friday. What I'll try to do is set up the video to focus on the passenger side mirror. Should be pretty funny.

Being a former LS1 Z28 owner I know a lot about them. They are fast but on average they run mid to high 13s in the 1/4 mile.

Some have run low 13s and even high 12s with excellent drivers but this is not the average. At our local track 95% of the stock or near stock LS1's run mid to high 13s or high 8s or low 9s in the 1/8 mile. A good driver with a stage 0 or xs stage 2 can beat them in the 1/4 mile. I know because I did it all the time.

I beat every stock or near stock LS1 I raced with my WRX with just a stage 2 setup. My 13.3 - 13. 5s were enough to beat every one of them at our track down here in S. Florida.

Just make sure he doesn't have some mods + 175 shot of NOS. Thats what a guy at our track has and he runs 7.2 in the 1/8 mile. Yikes - but thats a lot of NOS.

I got my ass handed to me by a Ram Air T/A on the way to the track one day. I beat him on the track, he CRUSHED me on the highway.

I raced a 97 ls1 auto vette the other day on the highway. I had him through 3rd and the beginning of 4th, but after 100mph, he put about 2 cars on me. When we got off the highway we went from 2nd to 4th gear and I had him by 1 1/2 cars the whole time.

I'm running a txs stage IV.

As said a couple times - depends on the mods and drivers. My own experience is with about 5 or 6 LS1s and a couple SS, mainly stock, but a couple with exhaust and intakes. The score is WRX - 7 or 8, and Chevy V8 - 0; that is from a stand still AND from about 10 mph to about 110-120. And without a doubt, I AM a Chevy V8 fan! Owned Corvettes and Z28s.

I beat a SS bad enough from a roll, the owner stopped me and wanted to know "what the f___ is in that thing!" I said "just a lot of 4 cylinder horsepower." That pissed him off enough to try again ... from a standstill

Fast Reggie - That's a funny story! He either doesn't know what AWD does for a launch or he doesn't know you're AWD

The first time I went to the 1/4 mile track in Sacramento I (Vishnu 0) beat my friend in his SS (aftermarket Exhaust - sounds great but don't think it ads much) and he immediately got challenged by all the Civics there....really cool

This is hilarious! What the hell was he thinking? SS driver, "Ok so you beat me from a roll and then a standstill, now I'm going to try to beat you by spotting you 2 cars and giving you the break".

On the track I had an LS1 who was even with me through the half way point, and I pulled on him the second half of the run. My car also pulls on (non-Z06) Vettes even from a roll to xxx rated speeds. I've rolled against 5 or 6 of them, and always end up walking them

The only SS I ever got to line up against was an 11.97 sec car, and he missed 3rd gear and I had a badly slipping clutch at that time. We ended up dead even on that run, he's the only car I've ever met on the road that I didn't spank...the AWD/big street turbo advantage is the car's big ally against cars that run faster ETs on the track.

It really all depends on the driver of the Camaro. If he launces bad and spins you should be able to hold him off in a street race, but never on the highway unless you got some mods and still make sure his is auto. Stock for Stock my money is on the Camaro in the 1/4mile, but with just a boost controller and a good launch it will be close. I raced my friends WS6 6- speed and would just edge him off 1/4 mile and we were both stock. Granted this was on the street, so traction was more my friend. My buddy's SS can pass at around 80-90 mph but his is auto but has some minor bolt-ons and he can launch pretty good. I am going to mess with the boost controller some more and maybe hold him off for the full 1/4 mile. He now has a 100 shot and it is very fast. It would take a Stage 4 WRX to be able to run him 1/4 mile. He is running stock tires so the WRX will have the obvious advantage. Either way, be careful when racing them because it is very easy to mod them and slap a set of ET Streets on there and hook hard. Take care -KEVIN- PS, Is it a Red 6-speed SS you are talking about SGOSWRX that runs those times. There is a Red 6 -speed SS with a 383 stroker and some big juice and ET streets that runs mid 10's in the quarter and high 6's in the 1/8th mile that runs at Bradenton occasionaly. He has like 683 wheel horsepower or something WOW!!! PEACE -KEVIN-

Twio friends of mine have auto-LS1 Camaros ('02) and run 12.8 and 12.9 trapping around 107-109. All they have is the "free ram air mod", cat back exhaust, and I think maybe a hi-po MAF sensor. They run on street tires too. I ran one of them from a dead stop to about 100mph... he locked me in around 80... caught me at 90 and passed me after 100...

Another friend of mine owns a 2002 Firehawk (auto)... his best run was 12.5 @ 108... he pulls 1.7 sixty foots on ET Streets!! He has a 3500 stall convertor and a few other things... exhaust I think... anyway, he kills me on a roll... BUT I raced him from 100 to about 140-145, and he could not catch me AT ALL!! We kept an equal disance the whole time... its was pretty cool, and man was I surprised!! I thought at those speeds I didn't stand a chance,... I guess the auto is WAY overdriven up top....

I also raced another friends Trans Am... its a six speed though, from a stop its about the same story as the auto Camaro I raced.... I got him , I got him, here he comes... here he comes.... there he goes!!

I raced a friends auto C5, same outcome... I am starting to see a pattern....

BTW- the friends with the LS1 belong to EFA, and get this: this guy they are friends with is filfthy rich right.... well his parents gave him something $75k to buy whatever car he wanted...

he got an '02 M3!! Pretty badass right.... well shortly after that something happened to the engine, MAJOR valve tap or something... real bad (it was sad to see a new M3 sick).... he sold the M3 the next day and got an '02 Trans Am!!!!

Interestring eh?

Thats pretty darn good running close to dead even up to 100mph with a lightly modded 02 LS1. The 02 models are definately faster than previous years.
I owned a 94z28 and a stage 2, 99z28 (450+hp) and they are fun cars. My WRX is a completely different experience in every way. I had to completely relearn how to drive. My z28 wanted to slide the back end out all the time. The one thing that really bothered me was the car felt really heavy to drive. Very little road feel. I get a complete opposite feeling in my WRX. One thing for sure is the top end power of the LS1. With my stage 2 setup my car pulled like a frieght train even at 130+ mph. That something I do miss.
