Default Clunk in front end

I am having a clunking noise comeing from the front end of my car.. It sounds like it is comeing from the front left wheel.

The sounds only occurs now and then.

if I am going slow and hit the brakes it does it (sometimes)

if I am backing up and stop it does it (sometimes)

does not sound like a bad cv joint though

any ideas????

Same thing here. It only happens when I am backing up or start going forward and have the wheels turned to almost full lock. Can't figure out what it is but I doubt it is to serious. anyone know?

If its what I think it is...I've asked the tech guys from my dealership and they say its just the brakes and its normal. They are just moving very slightly when you brake going in a different direction. Like if you are going forward and then back up and apply the brakes it will happen and so forth. It happens on my car, but I'd describe it more as a click than a clunk. *shrug* maybe its not the same thing.

I don;t think he is talking about the same thing if it is what is happening to my car. It happens to my car while not using the brakes.

Well, at least I tried. A clunk without using the brakes...doesn't sound good. I would get it checked out asap personally.

I was told the same thing by my dealer's service department. A quick way to see if this is the problem you are having is to back up slowly, apply the brakes, pull forward and apply the brakes again. Chances are you will hear a clunk.

It may be "normal" but it sure annoys the fudge out of me!

dont know all that much about how the stuff is put together in the front of the car, but iv heard that clunking noises in the front can be from worn/damaged/loose endlinks.

I first noticed the clunking noise coming from my front wheels last week. Did any of you end up finding out that it's not normal?

It definitely sounds vaguely unwholesome...

That is your rear differential... at least that is what it should be... and it is loud.

The dictionary didn't know the word endlink. However, if it's the joint below the strut, it was the case in my Subie last year. I was in the army back then so I paid to do it, but the part wasn't expensive. It was in USD something like 25 or so.

That was my problem at least.

Here is a related pdf http://www.endwrench.com/pdf/steerin...seInfoSp99.pdf. It's about legacys front end clunk and the fix for it is fairly simple.

The endlink is the part that goes on the end of the sway bar. They are platic stock. These do seem to come loose, but if it was a loose endlink, you would hear the noise when you went over bumps, and when you took corners.
