Event: Road Dyno Tuning in South Florida
Location: I75

Elevation: 0
Weather: Hot, Humid
Tires: Stock BBS 17's, spacers, fenders rolled

Car: 2006 STi
Tuner: STi Mikey of PhatBotti Tuning
Dyno Info: Airboy
Transmission: 6spd
Gear: 4th
Peak HP at RPM: 420whp @ 6200
Peak Torque at RPM: 400wtq @ 4900
Baseline hp/tq for a stock on same dyno: 210-215whp
Target Boost: 28 PSI
Target AFR: 10.8
Fuel: Mobil 93 octane

Modifications:

Custom Rotated 35R .63 kit, DW 1100cc, Perrin FMIC, Hallman MBC,Stock Clutch Olympic Motorsport Built 2.5 w/ CP psitons, manley rods, ACL bearings.

This car was an absolute blast to tune. Most of the pulls were made on I75 through the Everglades, my favorite tuning spot in South Florida. Every time we pulled off to flash or fix a boost leak, I could not help thinking about jumping the fence and taking a swim

Roman, the owner of this 06 STi is very pleased with its performance. We both know the clutch is on limited time, so that is in the future plans before we throw some good gas in the tank and go for 10's. Ill be down there again next month for a few Subies and a couple GT-R's. I'm hoping we can get a nice slip then!!

I want to thank Rob, aka Smereone for letting me make his house my office while I'm down there. Looks like trips will continue every month to 2 months for all interested.

Onto the good stuff!!

And the graph:

Just a quick reference, 404whp on a simlilar setup went 122.8 mph down the dragstrip. Even in this heat, this pans out to be a 124-125mph car on straight 93 octane

Enjoy guys,

-Mikey

I'm surprised you had to run that much boost for 420whp. I've seen cars get close to 400whp on 91 at around 20-21psi.

In all honesty Ed I think 420whp is spot on. This is typical of all other stock head / built block 35R setups running 27-29 PSI trapping in the mid 120's.

Your software and the airboy are pretty relative when utilized correctly. In almost all cases, they are not more than 5% apart, perhaps even 1 or 2%.

With this being said, your disclaimer now over a year old with a proven track record states:

350-360whp : 120-121 traps

I claim this car is a 124-125 mph car. Even if you were confident in the airboy reading 5 percent higher than your software, that would put me right about 400whp on your software. 400whp in this case being 124-5mph capable.

At first I did agree with what you said, but I guess you have to think in terms of percentages, and not raw numbers. 422 whp is substantial considering the 91 octane 380whp stock head 35R cars. Nearly an 11% power difference, solely due to piss octane.

Jays05 trapped 130 and only made 480.

Thats it, I'm going back to the virtual dyno

Hell yeah it is, but 32psi on good gas is even more winning

We just were not up to it being that this car is still on the stock clutch

Someday my car will either be painted red or rock the 35R. Or I will get married.

Don't get me wrong, I think the power level is just fine for 93, i'm just wondering why it took so much boost to get there. Maybe the .63 a/r is choking things a bit?

I really was wondering the same 28psi is a ton of boost, maybe he is running really conservative timing?

Yes Juan, the ignition used in this car is set fairly low. I was able to make relative power using 2 more degrees and less boost. I just rather use air

28psi is just right with this setup. I do not consider it a ton, however. We were pulling in 90 degree weather yesterday. 10-12 clean pulls had me thinking about 30, hahaha

My 2011 STI order got cancelled due to the quake.

I will likely get a 2012, but I will wait til spring when they get caught up. Then (hopefully) the EFRs will be out in full swing.
Unfortunately the new Audi RS3 concept (2.5 5cyl 408 turbo, w/ good weight distribution, etc......) has caught my eye. So I may be modding an Audi RS3 in 2013.

Even though some customers do not know a thing about tuning, I love seeing the look on their faces when I show them before and after 2 and 3D graphing.

LittleBlue,

Let me know if you need any help with the A3. I love tuning Audi's even though the Audi community sucks around here. Hey, i guess i would be pissed too if 75% of my income went toward maintenance and repair

I mean, drop in pistons in a subie and our problems are solved.

Joking aside, I believe timing was 12* at peak and 19* by 7200. This is actually a degree more than I usually use for a 35 .63 on stock heads. Good gas is in the picture soon so I didnt want to push itany further. In all honesty, we never found the threshold, even pulling in 5th in South Florida temps. Its a .63, but she seemed to be breathing really well.

Seeing as we are OT:

I would be interested in the new RS3, but it seems that I would be pretty much stuck with "stage2ish" power levels. I haven't found anyone that has bigger turbo kits, bigger 1500 psi injectors and fuel pump, etc.....

It is my understanding that the new 2.5 liter 5 cylinder is pretty stout, and can take a lot more.

So the only 4 door AWD car that has 400 whp potential to me is the 2012 STI, or possibly the new RS3 sedan (assuming it comes with the aforementioned 408 hp stock). Besides, it is prettier, and won't require a $5000 custom light weight stereo like my current LGT has.

But hey, I am open to options.

I also haven't found out how most Audi's are tuned. Do the companies that sell re-flashes actual sell the software to use on your own? Or is there some OS stuff?

The OS stuff is good enough to get a few more ponies out of it, but I do not like using it.

Eurodyne Maestro 7. If you get an Audi and would like to tune 2 and 3d tables, check it out.

Also, just saw the PM. I would be glad to send you my exhaust cam mapping for the GR's if you want to see it.
