Default Anyone have experience with Stack clusters? Other similar options?

I was looking closely at purchasing an ST8100, and was wondering if anyone has used one, or if you could recommend something similar? If you have used one, can you comment on the quality or ease of visibility at night?

I'm building a race/street car that currently has no cluster, and I've got a mismatched pile of various gauges (different sizes/face colors) that I've been looking to simplify. These two factors taken together make the price much easier to swallow. (My alternative would be autometer tach/speedo, and Defi boost/oil P/oil T/water T/fuel P The only function the stack cluster lacks is boost, which can be added, but I'd honestly rather have a standard analog boost gauge elsewhere on the dash anyway.

The one I'm looking at is: http://www.stackltd.com/st8100.html

Why not look at the AIM Sport's MXL data acquisition display system? They event have a plug-n-play for STI's and the prices are very within reach for us working class people. You can even acquire suspension data with additional sensors as well which is very nice. It's also compatible many aftermarket ECU's. This is the unit I'm going to look into.

The Stack unit is very nice and has been around for a while now but the unit looks very outdated too.

I did not realize they had a plug and play for the stock STI ECU. I am sick of having to scan around the dashboard on straights to make sure all readings look normal this maybe something I look into as well.

Thanks

Wow, very interesting. This isn't actually going into a Subaru (sold it, but I still come here because I trust the judgment/opinions of this forum over all others), but the car will have an AEM EMS, which is also one of the ECUs the MXL Strada interfaces with. This is particularly interesting because additional sensors can readily be added to the AEM EMS very cheaply (GM sensors). I need to research if the MXL would be able to display those values.

The only "con" I see is that the tach is digital. I would need to see one in person before I would be ready to give up an analog tach.

I know on my cart that was one of the things I monitored on my Mychron 3 so I imagine it is available just not listed.

Do you really use the tachometer in your car currently?

I know for me I can judge really well just by sound where I need to shift. Also the green, yellow, and then red display that you have preset for something like this really catches your eye.

You make a good point. I probably think I use it a whole lot more than I actually use it. My buddy used to have an S2k that I drove a lot and I never liked the tach. I guess that is what's stuck in my mind.

Has anyone used an MXL at night? My car is mostly used on the street and I was wondering if the blue glow gets offensive after a while?

I use this display in my race car so tach is not an issue with me as I would with my corner of my eye see the LED warning light as it comes closer to the redline. That's what I look for without having to take my eyes of the road.

Again, this unit is mainly design for racing and I have no clue about being used on the streets.

I thought I would give this one last "bump." I'd like to order the Stack cluster in the next month or so.

There are a couple good suggestions in this thread:

Don't hang out on that forum too long. They're a bad influence on your RX7.

...funny you say that.

OK, I've gone an changed my mind. I've been trying to read/learn more about the AIM MXL Strada. Has anyone here used on reading from an AEM ECU?

EDIT: I'm skeptical of the whole process via AEM because I once had an AEM Serial Datastream gauge and using it was a total PITA. I believe this MXL uses the same method of connecting/disconnecting.

I use it in our race car here at work for data and telemetry. Serial port connection data stream into the AIM MXL is good clear and never fails. You will have to install a separate sensor for oil P but other than that it works fine.

Just to be clear, you do use it connected to an AEM EMS?

Yes on the AEM EMS port. Just make sure you know how to set the channels on the AIM to output the data you are looking for.

One final bump...

I'm probably going to pick up the MXL in the coming few weeks.

Go for the MXL. The shift lights are all you need for a tach. I had one in my SM and loved it. They're also pretty easy to work with and come with some decent software

The only aspect I am concerned about is tweaking/logging with the laptop, while still needing a dash. When using RS232, can't you only have one or the other (dash or laptop) attached to the ECU?

EDIT: Also, how does the fuel reading work on the MXL? On the STACK unit, you can program it to interpret your factory level sensor.

I'm looking at getting one soon too for my rally car, please update this thread with results/issues/etc, OK? (I've been told it will plug-n-play with my LinkG3)

and ditto on the fuel gauge connection....would like this to replace everything on my dash + gauges.

I actually found a local race shop/stocking dealer of both AiM products and STACK. I spoke with a gentleman on the phone today about the two (Strada vs. 8100) and will be going to check out both this Friday (if my workload cooperates). He said they have at least the ST8100 installed in a car currently at the shop, so I may be able to check that out.

I went ahead and ordered an MXL Strada and an AEM EMS v2. I snap a pic when it shows up.
