Well, I blew my first MAF to get a CEL today. Unfortunately for me, it was the replacement MAF that was supposed to be "better." Blew it in less than 2 weeks. I pleaded with the guy at the dealership. Please, let me keep this MAF because it hasn't blown in a year. Nope, can't do it, it's a Federal recall. So this is what I get. Stupid, really pisses me off. :monkey: to shoddy design, and shoddy workmanship on the part of the manufacturer of the part.
Have you blown a post-recall MAF on your '99? Post your fury here! :monkey:

If it blew that fast...can you take it back and get it replaced?

Not doubting you, but are you sure it was the MAF that tripped the CEL??? Were there any other indications of the MAF being blown other than a CEL? Just curious.

Nothing has been changed on the car as far as anything with the engine is concerned in about 8 months except for the MAF, which as I explained earlier, was changed < 2 weeks ago. There are no leaks anywhere in the intake or exhaust. The airflow numbers aren't quite right anymore on the S-AFC, and the engine runs hotter. Those are my indications.
The thing is that I can already see the argument that it was my CAI that caused the sensor to blow, which is complete and utter BS. That's why I didn't want to replace the MAF sensor in the first place, because I never ever had a problem with the old one. I'm just frustrated, because this means that I will probably have to continue to pay out of pocket until I find one that isn't as fragile. |

Hmmm, Interesting info. I too have had no MAF problems in 2+ years and I'm reluctant to have the recall performed for exactly the same reason.

I pleaded with them, but they said that since it was a "Federal" recall, they HAD to change it. My guess is that the next time you get your car serviced at a Subaru dealer, they'll run your VIN, find out it's a '99 and change it anyway.
I'm with you. I had absolutely zero problems with my original MAF. |

No, they aren't required by law to do it, but they are by Subaru's policy.
And recalls are for the life of the car, so if it's bad, go get another free one. Be carefull with the CAI, MAFs don't like oil (ie K&N filters) |
