Default EJ20G Starting issues, help needed asap please!

**I have searched the forums, but have been unable to find exactly what may be the culprit.

About a month after I got this car, its developed a bit of a starting issue. Originally, the key could turn fully around, and be pulled out while the car was running. I replaced the ignition lock cylinder and that seemed to help for a few days. After that, its starting to be a constant thing. Sometimes the car starts with any issues, sometimes it takes 20 minutes of slamming doors, turning the key millions of times, and just totally pissing me off.
Anyone have any ideas what it may be? Ive disconnected and reconnected the turbo timer, which does nothing. The fuel pump turns on when the key is turned, and when it is being tempermental, when you turn the key, you can hear something click, but thats it. The volt gauge goes all the way down to nothing when that happens. All the lights work, it has a brand new battery. I just have no clue what to even start looking for.
Can anyone help? For reference, it is a 1994 JDM WRX, with EJ20G engine.

My voltage gauge also goes to 0 (actually 8V which is the minimum it can show) when attempting to crank. Very likely it's a battery issue. If you can get the car to start consistently when connected to another car via jumper cable, that would point to a battery issue.

I have a similar issue (it started when the current battery was about 9 months old, it's now at 1 year) although it only requires about 2 or 3 tries to start the car. I have found that leaving the key at the start position helps i.e. if it does not start immediately, do not turn off and back on, leave it at the start position (even for 10 seconds), eventually it might start.

Do you think it could just be the cables/terminals? The battery was just replaced.

Not likely. In my experience corroded cables or terminals cause a total non start till they are cleaned or replaced.

I ran into this issue after a recent engine swap and it turned out to be a loose negative battery cable. Sometimes the car would start first try and the next try...nothing.

To rule out a battery or alternator issue, test the battery voltage with the car off and with it running. You should see around 12 and 14 volts respectively .

I have tightened and retightened them. I will just try to get a new set of cables and terminals tonight to see if that may help.

Any other ideas I can try before diving into buying parts hoping it will be fixed?

I would be looking at your whole ignition assembly. If you can turn the car on and the fuel pump activates and the stereo turns on and you can run your power windows then you have power. At least enough power that the car should at least attempt to start or activate the starter solenoid. Not attempting to start should tell you that the ignition wiring is bad.

The fact that the key could be completely rotated and/or removed what the car is running should tell you where to start. Has this car been broken into/stolen/hotwired?

When you replaced the ignition lock did you check the ignition wiring?
