Post This just in...still no definite F1 TV deal...

Speedvision Still Fighting For F1 Rights

Stamford, Conn., Feb. 27 — The inquiries continue to flood into Speedvision headquarters as to the status of the network’s Formula 1 coverage, which included live qualifying as well as race broadcasts last season.

Speedvision is still working on securing the U.S. rights to the broadcasts and will continue to do so right up until the time the green flag waves on qualifying Friday evening (U.S. time), according to senior vice president and executive producer Bob Scanlon.

"We’re continuing to negotiate for the rights with Bernie (Ecclestone)," Scanlon said. "We placed a call to his offices as recently as this morning."

A look at the Speedvision programming schedule shows that the network has the time blocked off for the F1 opener from Albert Park in Australia, as well as having time set aside for pre-race festitivies.

"We’re going forward as though that’s going to happen," Scanlon said. "We can literally wait until two minutes before the green flag and still get the broadcast on the air." — Eric Mauk, News Bureau Editor, RACER and Associate Editor, Champ Car

Unhappy

i don't understand this... they wanna make F1 appealing to the US crowd, but can't make up their mind on who's gonna have the tv rights less than 24hrs away from the 1st free practice sessions? *sighs*

Basically only a very few people can get Speedvision. ABC/ESPN, on the other hand, has much greater coverage (almost all cable packages include ESPN). Unfortunately ABC/ESPN's interest in providing decent full LIVE coverage of both qualifying and the races is somewhat lacking. I suspect Bernie having his people negotiate for the absolute best deal possible. ...hang in there & dont loose faith !

True. There was a similar situation a few years ago, and ESPN2 got the deal at the almost literal last minute. Hordes of rumors abound, but the fundamental issue here is that Ecclestone is overestimating the value of F1 to U.S. TV audiences.

The spectator success of the USGP seems to have blinded him to the abysmal ratings performance of the televised event. I forget the exact numbers, but they were almost on the accidental level, meaning people who tuned in by accident long enough to say "Hey, what the heck IS this?"

But, considering that both Ecclestone and Max Mosley feel that U.S. success is critical to the sport's continued growth, this behaviour seems rather odd. Especially when you consider that according to both Mosley and Ecclestone, spectators in the stands are like extras in a TV show. Which puts threats I'm seeing on the Speedvision board to no longer attend the USGP in perspective.

I'm hopeful, but apprehensive. Speedvision has actually flown a crew there, and is ready to go. That's faith. Perhaps they'll just bootleg it.

Anyone want a tape of qualifying/warm ups and the race? I'll be glued to it all weekend here.

You know this is pure greed and ignorance mixed together in a blinding stupid package.

I mean for the love of God, racing starts in 4 days! I can only get so much of my F1 fix reading speedvision updates and the Jordan web page.

On a side note. Speedvision is making the coverage of the FIA WRC one hour long this year instead of just 30 minutes! So if they can get that, then hopefully they can get F1
