Default When does boost kick in? At RPM? At WOT?

I thought I knew...and then some threads threw me off.

Does the turbo boost kick in (you know, with 14-ish psi) automatically past 3000RPM, or is it only when you floor the gas pedal?

Usually boost won't build up too far when below 3k rpm due to the engine not pushing enough exhaust to spool it up. However, the factory boost controller will limit to .5 bar below a certain % throttle position.

Boost builds as a result of the turbo turbine spinning faster, which is a result of exhaust gasses spinning it. You don;t get enough exhaust gas speed below 3K RPM or so, so the turbo is not spinning fast enough to generate boost.

Past 3K however, there is enough gas to really spin the turbo hard, which in turn created the big boost you refer to. Electonicaly it is controlled (with a solenoid) to limit the boost in various situations (gearing, rpm, etc.)
